Note to self: Singapore roads are dangerous, no matter how safe it appears.
Now, if you haven’t subscribed to that belief yet, you might want to do so now, because as the incident we are going to talk about shows that traffic accidents can happen anytime, to anyone.
Bus Collided With Cyclist & Pinned the Bicycle On Its Wheel At Marsiling
On 9 Nov 2021, at around late night, most of us are probably asleep or getting ready for bed; for a few individuals, however, it would be a night to remember.
At around 11:35pm, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) were alerted to a traffic accident at the junction of Marsling Drive and Admiralty Road.
According to The Straits Times report, an SMRT bus, bus service 903, collided with a cyclist, presumed to be a food delivery rider based on the Grabfood bag spilt onto the floor.
An image of the aftermath also showed the bicycle pinned under the bus’s front wheel.
While it wasn’t clear how the accident occurred, an eyewitness to the accident said the bus was turning right onto Admiralty Road from Marsiling Drive while the driver was crossing the road via the pedestrian crossing.
About 10 passengers were on the bus.
It was added that the bus driver immediately stopped the bus and alighted to check on the cyclist.
Bus Driver Suspended; Cyclist Sent To Hospital
The cyclist, who was conscious, was conveyed to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital via ambulance.
According to the director of bus operations for SMRT Buses, Mr Lee Yong Heng, the bus driver has been suspended from driving duties.
It was added that the transport company has reached out to the victim’s family to offer assistance and support.
SMRT is also working with the relevant authorities for this case, which is still under investigation.
“Safety is our priority,” Mr Lee said.
Not The Only Bus Incident This Month
Just a few days ago on 6 Nov 2021, a Tower Transit bus, bus service 969, smashed into a taxi stand along Yishun Ave 2.
In total, three individuals were sent to the hospital; two pedestrians, both females aged 60 and 64, as well as the bus driver.
Investigations are ongoing for the case and Tower Transit, then, said they are reaching out to offer support to the injured and their families.
The bus driver, similarly, has been suspended.
SMRT and Tower Transit aren’t the only ones to deal with recent bus accidents as well.
SBS: Three Bus Collision At Upper Paya Lebar Road

Those injured in the collision included a bus driver of service 113, a passenger on bus 24, and another passenger on bus 113.
The bus driver and the 72-year-old passenger onboard bus 24 were both conveyed to Sengkang General Hospital in a conscious state.
The other passenger, onboard service 113, was attended to by paramedics at the scene and left soon after.
SBS Transit apologised for the incident and said it has been in touch with the passengers to extend its care as much as possible.
