Marvel Studios released the first full trailer for Avengers: Doomsday on 20 July 2026, giving viewers their clearest look yet at the film’s enormous crossover cast.
The movie is scheduled to be released exclusively in cinemas on 18 December 2026.
More importantly, Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
However, he is not playing Iron Man.
He is now Doctor Doom, the villain powerful enough to make even Thor look worried.
Here’s what you need to know.
The First Full Trailer Has Finally Arrived
Marvel had previously released several shorter character teasers for Avengers: Doomsday. Those clips revealed the return of characters such as Steve Rogers, Thor and several members of the X-Men.
The new trailer is different.
At approximately two minutes and 25 seconds long, it provides a much clearer look at the film’s story, battles and collection of superheroes.
The trailer begins at a badly damaged Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, the school associated with Professor X and the X-Men.
Professor X, played by Patrick Stewart (who has been busy with being Jean-Luc Picard for the last few years), watches as destruction unfolds outside while a warning is heard about an approaching danger that may be impossible to stop.
Thor later addresses a gathering of heroes.
He explains that he has previously fought alongside heroes more powerful than many of the people standing before him, but those heroes still died while facing threats that frightened him less than the current one.
Basically, when the God of Thunder starts giving a motivational speech about how everyone might die, the situation is probably quite serious.
The footage also shows Cyclops, Gambit fighting Shang-Chi, Yelena Belova fighting Mystique and Loki wearing a Time Variance Authority badge.
The Time Variance Authority, or TVA, is the organisation responsible for monitoring different timelines in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Doctor Doom Is Played by the Man Who Was Iron Man
The trailer’s biggest attraction is Robert Downey Jr. as Victor von Doom, better known as Doctor Doom.
Downey previously played Tony Stark and Iron Man from 2008’s Iron Man until Avengers: Endgame in 2019.
Doctor Doom is traditionally one of the Fantastic Four’s greatest enemies.
In Marvel’s comics, he is a scientific genius, a powerful user of magic and the ruler of the fictional country of Latveria.
The trailer shows Doom confronting Thor, who attacks him using Stormbreaker.
However, Doom appears to gain the upper hand during their clash, leading Thor to conclude that the heroes may need a miracle.
That “miracle” appears to be Steve Rogers.
Chris Evans returns as the original Captain America near the end of the trailer and summons Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, into his hand.
Steve previously wielded the hammer during the final battle against Thanos in Avengers: Endgame.
Three Marvel Universes Are Being Pulled Together
Disney’s official synopsis says that heroes from three distinct universes will be placed on a deadly collision course while facing an existential threat.
An existential threat is something capable of destroying an entire civilisation, universe or way of life. Yes, it’s almost like every plot in every Avengers moive leh.
The trailer brings together characters from several major Marvel groups.
These include the Avengers, the New Avengers introduced through Thunderbolts, the Fantastic Four, Wakandan characters and actors from the earlier X-Men films.
The cast includes Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson’s Captain America, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova and Tom Hiddleston as Loki.
Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach return as the Fantastic Four.
Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen are also back as Professor X and Magneto.
Other returning X-Men actors include James Marsden as Cyclops, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler and Kelsey Grammer as Beast.
Channing Tatum also returns as Gambit after playing the character in Deadpool & Wolverine.
Basically, Marvel saw how many characters were already inside the movie and decided that one universe was not enough.
The Russo Brothers Are Directing It
Avengers: Doomsday is being directed by Anthony and Joe Russo.
The brothers previously directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
That means Marvel is bringing back the filmmakers responsible for the MCU’s previous two major Avengers crossover films.
Avengers: Doomsday will be the first new Avengers film since Avengers: Endgame was released in 2019.
It will also be followed by Avengers: Secret Wars, which is currently scheduled for release on 17 December 2027.
For now, Marvel has only revealed that the heroes from three universes will collide while confronting Doctor Doom.
Considering the number of superheroes involved, the greater challenge may be ensuring that everyone gets enough screen time.
