Eggs from the United States have returned to Singapore after an absence of more than two decades.
The first shipment arrived by air earlier in July 2026, and importers are now in discussions with supermarkets, restaurants and hotels about selling them here.
The Eggs Have Already Arrived in Singapore
The American Egg Board announced the reopening of the Singapore market on 31 July, describing it as the first export of US shell eggs here in 26 years.
Its announcement named Hillandale Farms, Rose Acre Farms and Mid-States Specialty Eggs among the producers participating in the relaunch.
The first shipments are being handled by Singapore importers with distribution networks covering retail shops, hotels, restaurants and food manufacturers.
According to The Straits Times, the initial eggs were flown into Singapore. Shipping them by sea would take an estimated 30 to 45 days, although future transport arrangements will depend on agreements between exporters and importers.
Why US Eggs Disappeared for More Than 20 Years
The US stopped supplying eggs to Singapore in the early 2000s after the Singapore Food Agency tightened its requirements for imported eggs.
The trade channel reopened in early 2026 after US agricultural officials and SFA reached agreements covering export certification and the tracing of eggs during a potential disease outbreak.
Traceability basically means the authorities must be able to determine which approved processing facility an egg came from. This allows affected products to be located and recalled more quickly if a food safety issue occurs.
One important change allows the required identification code to be printed on the retail carton instead of being stamped on every individual egg. Direct exports from farms are still not allowed, as the eggs must come through processing facilities recognised under the US Department of Agriculture’s system.
Each future shipment must also be accompanied by a USDA shell egg grading certificate and a disease-free statement. The documents confirm details including the number of eggs and whether they originated from an area that meets Singapore’s requirements concerning diseases such as highly pathogenic avian influenza.
Both White and Brown Eggs Could Be Sold Here
The shipments include both white and brown eggs.
One Singapore importer told ST that white eggs were particularly attractive because it currently obtained most of them from Ukraine. Having the US as another source would provide more options when supplies from existing markets are disrupted.
Importers said they expected the American eggs to be priced competitively against eggs from Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.
One importer said the US eggs could cost a few cents more but believed consumers might accept the difference for the perceived quality. However, the final retail prices will depend on arrangements with supermarkets and other buyers.
US Eggs Will Initially Form Only a Small Part of Our Supply
The USA Poultry and Egg Export Council expects around 1.2 million to 1.5 million US eggs to be exported to Singapore each month initially.
Its president, Greg Tyler, hopes American suppliers could eventually serve around 10 per cent of Singapore’s egg market. However, that remains a longer-term goal rather than the volume Singapore will receive immediately.
Singapore’s egg supply exceeded 2.2 billion eggs in 2025, with Malaysia remaining the largest overseas source. This means the first US shipments will form only a small fraction of the eggs consumed here.
In other words, the supermarket egg aisle is not about to become the United States of Omelette overnight.
Why Singapore Wants Eggs From More Countries
Singapore imports more than 90 per cent of its food, making the country vulnerable when disease outbreaks, export restrictions or geopolitical conflicts affect a major supplier.
SFA’s strategy is therefore to obtain food from a wider range of countries instead of relying heavily on only one or two sources. Singapore obtained food from more than 180 countries and regions in 2025, compared with about 140 around two decades earlier.
Local farms supplied around 34 per cent of the hen shell eggs consumed in Singapore in 2024. Imports are still required to meet the remaining demand, even as Singapore continues supporting local egg production.
Adding the US does not mean Singapore is replacing eggs from Malaysia, Thailand or local farms. It gives importers another source to turn to if supplies elsewhere are disrupted.
The Timing Also Works for American Egg Producers
The US egg industry suffered major disruptions from bird flu, which reduced the number of laying hens and pushed prices upwards in 2024 and 2025.
However, US egg production has been recovering in 2026. The US Department of Agriculture expects American retail egg prices to fall by 30.7 per cent for the full year, partly because there were fewer new bird flu detections in early 2026 and sufficient replacement hens were available.
That recovery has encouraged American producers to look overseas for additional customers.
For Singaporeans, the result could be more choices in supermarkets and a slightly more resilient egg supply. Your morning half-boiled eggs may soon be American, even if your kaya toast remains very Singaporean.
