S’pore Is Testing Chat.gov.sg, a Chatbot for Official Government Information

Singapore has started beta testing Chat.gov.sg, a new government chatbot that lets members of the public ask questions in everyday language and get answers drawn from official government sources.

The chatbot entered its final pre-release phase on 3 July 2026. GovTech Singapore and the Public Service Division (PSD) confirmed details of the service to CNA on Friday (21 August).

Chat.gov.sg can be used in Singapore’s four official languages: English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil.

One place to find government information

PSD and GovTech said the chatbot was created because finding government information can sometimes involve going through different agencies and websites.

With Chat.gov.sg, members of the public can ask questions in one place and receive answers based on information from official sources.

The chatbot pulls information from government websites and provides source links, with GovTech and PSD saying this helps ensure the information remains updated as the underlying official websites are updated.

ServiceSG, which describes itself as a first-stop concierge for helping citizens access government services across agencies, directs the chatbot’s strategy and development.

GovTech Singapore is responsible for building and operating the technology behind it.

It does not replace helplines or officers

While Chat.gov.sg can handle many common questions, GovTech and PSD said it is not meant to replace existing helplines or conversations with public officers.

For more complicated situations or matters involving personal circumstances, people may still need to speak to an officer who can understand their specific needs.

GovTech and PSD said the chatbot can help handle routine questions, allowing public officers to spend more time on cases that require human support.

Conversations stay within government systems

GovTech and PSD said conversations with Chat.gov.sg remain within government systems.

The AI tools used by the chatbot do not retain chat history or use conversations to train their models, they said.

The government will continue monitoring how people use the chatbot and review the questions submitted to improve the service.

Early responses have been encouraging, according to GovTech and PSD.
