More than 10kg of cannabis was seized at Tuas Checkpoint after two Malaysians were arrested for allegedly attempting to bring the drugs into Singapore on a motorcycle.
The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said the pair, a 36-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman, arrived at Tuas Checkpoint on a Malaysia-registered motorcycle on Tuesday (16 September).
They were referred for enhanced checks based on information from ICA’s Integrated Targeting Centre, which conducts risk assessments on travellers, vehicles and cargo.
Drugs Found Under Motorcycle Seat And In Haversack
During the checks, ICA officers found four bundles of vegetable matter believed to be controlled drugs underneath the motorcycle seat.
Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) officers were then alerted. Further checks found another six bundles in a black haversack placed on the motorcycle’s handlebar.
The 10 bundles were later found to contain about 10.1kg of cannabis. The seized drugs were estimated to be worth more than S$203,000 and could potentially feed the addiction of about 1,450 abusers for a week, ICA said.
Investigations Ongoing
ICA said investigations into the case are ongoing.
Under Singapore’s Misuse of Drugs Act, anyone who imports or exports more than 500g of cannabis may face the death penalty if convicted.
ICA said it will continue working with CNB to prevent attempts to smuggle drugs across Singapore’s borders.
