A 53-year-old man was arrested within four hours after police received a report about an alleged break-in at a shop along East Coast Road.
About S$100 in cash was allegedly stolen from the premises, according to the Singapore Police Force.
The man is due to be charged in court on Monday, 21 September.
Police Received Report on Saturday Afternoon
Police were alerted to the alleged housebreaking at about 1.40pm on Saturday, 19 September.
Officers from Bedok Police Division and the Police Operations Command Centre subsequently carried out investigations and reviewed footage from police cameras and closed-circuit television cameras.
The footage helped officers establish the identity of the 53-year-old man.
He was arrested within four hours of the initial police report.
8world reported that the man is understood to be a Singaporean.
Police did not disclose the name of the shop in their statement as reported by 8world.
Man Due to Be Charged on 21 September
The suspect is expected to be charged with housebreaking in order to commit theft under the Penal Code.
If convicted of an offence under Section 451 of the Penal Code, an offender can be jailed for up to 10 years and fined. Singapore’s current Penal Code lists Section 451 as covering housebreaking committed in order to carry out an offence punishable with imprisonment.
Police also advised property owners to properly secure doors, windows, roller shutters and other entrances when leaving their premises unattended.
They recommended avoiding the storage of large amounts of cash and valuables on the premises, as well as using security measures such as burglar alarms, CCTV cameras and motion-sensor lights.
Such equipment should also be checked regularly to ensure that it is working properly.
