Police are investigating after a video circulated online showing a man wearing what were alleged to be smart glasses while walking behind female students near Marymount MRT station.
The police confirmed to CNA on Wednesday, 23 September, that a report had been lodged and investigations were ongoing.
The video shows the man walking behind students wearing uniforms resembling those of Raffles Institution. It is unclear when the footage was recorded.
Man Seen Pressing Side of Black-Rimmed Glasses
According to CNA, the man was dressed in a dark T-shirt and black shorts and was walking along a pedestrian walkway said to be towards Marymount MRT station.
He was holding a mobile phone close to his chest and, at one point, was seen pressing the frame of his black-rimmed glasses.
When he appeared to notice that someone was filming him, he turned around and walked in the opposite direction.
The Instagram account Singapore Parents uploaded the video on 22 September and alleged that the man was wearing smart or artificial intelligence glasses capable of recording video.
However, the footage itself does not establish whether the glasses were recording at the time, or whether the man had recorded the students.
Police have also not announced that an offence has been established.
Video Was Earlier Posted on Reddit
CNA reported that the footage had first been uploaded to Reddit two days earlier. The post had been removed when CNA checked the platform at about 7pm on 23 September.
The Straits Times similarly reported that the video was shared on Reddit on 21 September before being reposted on Instagram the following day.
ST said the video showed the man walking behind a pair of female students. When approached by the person recording him, he changed direction and could be seen with a finger near the left hinge of his glasses.
The exact model of glasses worn by the man has not been confirmed in the reports.
Smart glasses can contain technology such as cameras, microphones and speakers. Their ability to incorporate recording functions into ordinary-looking eyewear has also led to privacy concerns internationally.
Police investigations are ongoing.
