Singapore’s Haze Expected to Ease as Winds Shift; Wetter First Half of November Ahead

Singapore’s haze situation is expected to improve as changing winds and wetter weather reduce the likelihood of smoke reaching the island, the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS) said on 29 October.

The Southwest Monsoon is weakening, with inter-monsoon conditions gradually setting in across Singapore and the surrounding region.

The persistent winds from the southeast or southwest are giving way to lighter winds that change direction. These are less likely to carry smoke from regional fires towards Singapore, MSS said.

More Afternoon Showers Expected in November

Moderate to heavy thundery showers are forecast over parts of Singapore on most afternoons during the first two weeks of November. On a few days, rain could continue into the evening.

Rainfall is expected to be slightly above the long-term average across most of the island.

Daily highs should range from 33°C to 35°C on most days, potentially edging above 35°C on a few days.

Moderate PSI Forecast for 30 October

In its separate haze update on 29 October, the National Environment Agency (NEA) forecast a Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) of 60 to 90, within the Moderate range, for 30 October.

At 7pm on 29 October, the 24-hour PSI ranged from 68 to 77, also Moderate. The one-hour PM2.5 readings were between 14 and 28 micrograms per cubic metre, within the Normal band.

NEA still observed moderate to dense smoke haze over Kalimantan. It expected showers over Sumatra, Kalimantan, Singapore and surrounding areas on 30 October to help suppress the haze affecting Singapore.

For planning the next day’s outdoor activities, NEA advises using the PSI forecast and corresponding health guidance. For activities taking place immediately, check the one-hour PM2.5 readings and personal guide on the haze website or myENV app.
