After two or three years in university, most of us are probably thinking, “I have finally made it this far”. That’s after years of shitty project mates, some super intense passive-aggressive arguments with professors who seem to have something against you and also of course, mugging for finals at the end of every semester like there is no tomorrow. However, in your final year, you would probably have had accumulated quite a bit of experience in dealing with all these.
First, check your GPA.
The first thing to do before you decide how to go about spending your last year in university is to check your GPA. If your degree classification is almost set in stone i.e. mid-class like 3.75 or 4.25, you can proceed to slack your final year away, unless you have an important FYP of course. If your GPA is borderline i.e. 3.95 or 4.05, then good luck. You are still not done with the soul-sucking monster that’s university.
Don’t bother with class participation just for the sake of it.
Repeat that after me, twice. By now, you should know better than to act like a freshie and raise your hand after the end of every sentence uttered by the professor. There is just no meaning in commenting on or questioning what everyone, including you, already knows merely for the sake of getting the teacher to award you a few more marks that probably won’t even make a difference in your grades. Only do it if you truly have something meaningful to contribute.
Just turn up to class whenever you want (or don’t).
You are already a final-year student, you should already know how to prioritise your stuff. If you are rushing out a 40% essay, you need to know better than to attend that 4-hours seminar where the professor literally reads from the notes. Don’t feel bad for acting like an adult (as you are supposed to) – you lose some, you gain some.
Start shortlisting potential careers.
Although the job market is still doing okay (somewhat), it doesn’t necessarily mean that your career of choice is hiring. Singapore’s stronger fortes are in shipping and manufacturing, but not everybody wants to go in there. If you are absolutely insistent on getting into that bank or MNC, start looking early. Schools usually have career fairs and job portals to make your life easier!
Finally, just enjoy yourselves.
For many of us, it would be the final year where we can actually have complete freedom over how we choose to spend the majority of our days. Once you start to work, five out of seven days will be spent cooped up in an office. By the time you get to Friday, you might be too wiped out to even consider going out on the weekends.
