Older kids, if you’ve been wondering why your younger brother has been such an ass, you’ve been right all this while.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology did a study, and they’ve backed you up on this.
The university took on the subject on how birth order impacts delinquency, and found that the second boys in the family had a pretty much higher chance at showcasing delinquency issues compared to the elder ones.
The study was conducted in USA’s Florida as well as Denmark, with a large number of children participating.
Second-born boys that were registered with the juvenile judiciary system were also at a startling rate of 40% more compared to first-born kids.
The same percentage was also found in school suspension figures.
You elder fellas aren’t that good after all, also, you know. Why? Because the records also show that as far as ponteng-ing class and school goes, the figures are the same between the first and second child.
Here’s the funny thing.
Despite the fact that the study was conducted in two completely different parts of the world, America and Denmark, the consistency that showed through in both studies were pretty much the same. This is given the fact that the environments the kids were in were quite different also.
Second-born guys, you might be wondering – But why me?
Well, your parents must be blamed for that lah. Your elder brother gets more attention and time than you, of course you feel jealous, right?
The authors go on to explain that the second-born children get less mommy time compared to their older siblings. You firstborns are quite lucky, as you get two (or more!) maternity leaves to enjoy your mother being at home with you. This includes the time when the eldest was born, and when the second child was born, etc.
Now, don’t get all sad, second-born kids. The study didn’t say that all second born kids end up having a rough time with the law, remember?
It does, however, bring to memory all the time your mummy and daddy asked you, “Why can’t you be like your older brother?!”
The study isn’t all sad news, though. They did make other discoveries too.
You firstborns feel that they need to be the responsible one. Ring a bell, anyone? 54% of firstborns, to be exact, feel the urge to be the more responsible child compared to the rest of the kids in the house. This is a big jump compared to 31% for last-borns.
The younger guys are also more easy-going, relaxed and even funnier.
Wonder why this happens? The older one is always told to keep on a lookout for the younger kids in the family. The elder kids are also better in organizing their priorities and pretty much everything else in their lives.
The smaller siblings tend to be more favoured by the parents too.
Hmm… What’s your thoughts on your parents and siblings now?
