If you don’t have an aircon in your house, now might be a good time to invest in one.
Because you might have to get used to the warm weather we’ve been having over the past week. And be prepared for more.
According to a study, manmade climate change and a natural surge in the temperature of Earth’s surface will be combining forces.
Making the world heat up over the next five years.
What is a natural surge in the earth’s temperature?
Most people would’ve thought that the global warming phenomenon only happens due to the amount of greenhouse gases we expel into the atmosphere.
To say that is like saying my colleague is fat because McDonald’s sell fried food. He ate it all too happily as well.
According to the study, Earth itself experience fluctuations in surface temperatures naturally.
Over the past million years, it changes every 100,000 years between ice age and a climate warmer than what we’re having today.
And over the past 11,000 years, the fluctuations were pretty small, which is why humans are able to survive.
Manmade Climate Change
Now this, on the other hand, I’m pretty sure we all know about.
After all, it’s bandied around by environmentalist groups and governments banded together to form an agreement.
Billions of tonnes of greenhouse gases injected into the atmosphere, especially over the past century, leading to heat being trapped on earth.
Thus increasing Earth’s temperature.
Some said it’s a myth *coughTrumpcough* while others said it’s true, but companies are too greedy for profits.
Anthropogenic warming from 2018 to 2022
The team behind the study developed a new method for predicting climate change: PROCAST, or PRObabilistic foreCAST.
Their method predicts short-term natural changes in the climate.
They applied the method and found that from 2018 to 2022, the world will undergo anthropogenic warming.
Basically, it means that the impact created by natural warming will be the same as manmade climate change over the next five years.
In other words, global warming + natural warming = double increase in temperature.
With these two factors, Florian Sevellec, a climate scientist at the University of Brest in France said that it will lead to a long-term climate change.
So, Where Does That Leave Us?
Be prepared for hot days to come. Not good news, I know, given that Singapore is hot enough typically. Not to mention our electricity and water prices have (and will be, I’m pretty sure) increased.
And to know how lucky we are to live in Singapore, protected by other countries. At least location-wise.
It was found that the chances of a marine heatwave or other ocean “warming events” is forecasted to increase by 150 per cent. With “extreme warm events” in ocean surface waters, there’s a high chance that typhoons and hurricanes will form.
So use lesser plastic bags, try to go green and do your part for the environment. After all, if we can’t stop natural variations in the earth’s climate? We just have to deal with the manmade ones.
