We’re used to fairytales with happy endings, but sometimes, real-life doesn’t gift us with a happily ever after.
Two whole years ago in 2017, an orphaned Vietnamese baby was treated in a Singapore hospital, KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital.
Found
The baby’s name was Loc Pham Duc Loc. Loc was found abandoned at Van Buc Temple in Vietnam’s southern coastal province of Ben Tre back in July 2016.
The temple subsequently brought the infant in. However, he was found to have hydrocephalus, which is an abnormal build-up of the cerebrospinal fluid that surrounds the brain.
Simply put, a brain condition.
Loc was then brought to two different hospitals in Vietnam. However, he was deemed incurable by his doctor after two operations.
The good-hearted Vietnamese community living in Singapore heard about Loc’s plight and thought that it might be a good idea to bring Loc to Singapore for treatment.
I suppose they were hoping that Singapore could offer Loc medical expertise and treatments that Vietnam hospitals and doctors could not.
For a while, there was good news, and then there was bad news.
Loc arrived in Singapore in January 2017 where he was admitted at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital. Several operations later, his condition had seemingly improved.
Yes, several operations. Imagine the pain he must have gone through.
Hope
A restaurant owner by the name of Nguyen Hong Thao was kind enough to set up an online crowdfunding page to raise funds for Loc’s treatment in a campaign that successfully collected $100,000 from kind Singaporeans.
MP for Nee Soon GRC, Mr Louis Ng even took to Facebook to relay the plea for donations and visited Loc multiple times at the hospital.
Unfortunately, despite all the prayers and support pouring in, Loc passed away in a Vietnam hospital after an infection.
Details of Loc’s wake in Vietnam has been shared on Ms Nguyen’s Facebook page, which has garnered thousands of shares and comments.

Many netizens have also offered their condolences. May Loc rest in peace.
