According to a 1955 guide, wives are supposed to do these crazy things for their husbands.

In May 1955, Housekeeping Monthly published an article named “The Good Wife’s Guide”, describing the responsibilities and manners of a wife, to be a good partner to her husband and mother to her children. It was #forREAL then, but the guide honestly sounds like satire now. If it had been published this year, it would have caused an outrage. Imagine all the angry #genderequality people.

We have summarised some of the demands set forth by the article.

Thou shalt live by these commands.

1. Thou shalt make dinner.
Wives must have dinner ready every day. Most men are hungry when they come home and they must be welcomed with a hearty meal.

2. Thou shalt look presentable.
Touch up on your make-up and look fresh because your man has seen a lot of weary, grumpy people all day long.

3. Thou shalt stand-by-house.
Area-cleaning must be done daily, with clutter cleared. This means keeping schoolbooks, toys and paper neatly and wiping the dust off the furniture.

4. Thou shalt keep the house comfortably toasty and warm.
During autumn and winter, the fireplace must be kept lit, for your man to rest and unwind beside.

5. Thou shalt take care of the children.
Bathe them, comb their hair, wash their clothes, dress them. Also, make sure the children are quiet when your husband is working at home.

6. Thou shalt let him talk first.
When he first arrives home, let him share his day first, before you share yours. And please don’t let off a string of complaints and problems.

7. Thou shalt let him nua.
Let him lean back in his reclined chair. A warm drink beside will earn you bonus points.

8. Thou shalt not ask him questions about his actions or question his judgment of integrity.
Remember, your husband is the master of the house and he will always exercise his will with fairness and truthfulness. You have no right to question him.

How would a “Good Wife Guide” look like now?
