Court Lifts Gag Order on Former Mediacorp Star’s Identity

District Judge Eddy Tham lifted the gag order protecting Fang’s identity following an application by the prosecution.

The judge noted that while the main purpose of the gag order was to protect the victim from further harm, he took into account the wishes of the victim and her family to reveal Fang’s identity.

The victim’s identity remains protected by court order.

When the judge announced that media could reveal his identity, Fang appeared visibly uneasy in court, where he was wearing a black mask.

The China-born Singapore permanent resident faced a total of eight charges, with six related to having sex with the minor on five different days between 6 June and 20 June 2024.

Sexual Offences at Multiple Locations Including Hospital Room

Fang first met the teenager at an entertainment event in May 2024, where they exchanged contact details and began conversing daily.

Between June and July 2024, Fang had sex with the teen on nine occasions at various locations including Marina Bay Sands hotel, Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital, and his home.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Lynda Lee told the court that Fang had unprotected sex with the teen five times, only using protection when she insisted.

The prosecutor noted that Fang met the teen alone at night on each occasion, demonstrating he had planned the encounters.

In one instance, Fang visited the hospitalized teen after midnight when she was alone, having been admitted for a flu infection. He proceeded to have sex with her in the private hospital room.

The girl later saw a doctor after experiencing pain in her genitals and was diagnosed with human papillomavirus, a sexually transmitted infection.

The teen’s mother filed a police report in August 2024 after learning about the sexual relationship.

According to court documents, Fang attempted to obstruct justice by contacting the girl in August 2024, instructing her to cry in front of her mother and beg her not to let him go to jail.

He also stalked the victim by calling her 18 times in a single day on 22 September, sending WhatsApp messages, and logging into her virtual room on a karaoke app called Quan Min K Ge on 26 and 27 September, violating the Protection from Harassment Act.

The victim subsequently developed depression and had suicidal thoughts. She was eventually admitted to the Institute of Mental Health and diagnosed with adjustment disorder.

In his sentencing remarks, Judge Tham stated: “As a 34-year-old adult man, he knew what he was doing. He knew what was likely to take place each time he visited the victim.”

“It was not a one-off event. He had taken advantage of an emotional vulnerability. His attempt to gaslight the victim for the sole purpose of saving his own neck, without any concern for her welfare also led to more harm to the victim.”
