If you’re old enough, you’ll probably remember Har Paw Villa. Back before it was closed, this iconic park filled with legendary Chinese figures and, of course, the ten courts of hell was incredibly popular for families to go to on the weekends.
Back before horror movies from Hollywood, Thailand and Korea became mainstream, kids like us were spooked out after taking a walk through the courts of hell, were we not?
Looking at all those figurines of souls being tortured for their sins in life, it’s enough to make us lose sleep, at least for the next couple of nights; especially if your parents took the opportunity to drive it into your brain that if you did something bad, you will end up like that. And you know you just copied your friend’s homework before class the other day and lied to your teacher about it.
If you, like us, can still remember these memories starkly, then you will probably want to hear this. This time, Har Paw Villa is coming back into our lives with a bang. Literally.
Most of us like solving puzzles—there’s a reason why puzzle games like Candy Crush are still popular, but for some of us, those who are more adventurous, we prefer to get, well, more physical. And that is where Escape Rooms came in.
For those who don’t know (really?!), escape rooms, or escape games, are physical rooms where you, together with a group of friends, practise your observation skill and look for clues hidden within the room.
Then, you have to use your deduction skills to solve the puzzle before you can escape to the next room. Well, guess what? Har Paw Villa is bringing a large-scale escape game to you. That’s right, you get to play an escape game in Har Paw Villa, including within the ten courts of hell. Spooky. Imagine trying to escape the courts of hell—thrilling is probably an understatement.
The park operator has collaborated with escape game operator Lockdown Singapore to hold 4-hour-long games throughout the day, with 10 teams of 6 people within each session.
The game is titled “Journey to the West”, and it brings you across different sections of the 3.2ha park, including the Ten Courts of Hell and the Hua Song pavillions. The plot will be about a school excursion that went bad (is it just me or does it sound like the start of a horror movie?), and you, together with your friends, have to find and solve clues in order to escape and save another friend who has fainted.
The park operator, Journeys, said that by organising escape games within the park, they hope to relate to and engage the interest of the younger generation, and reconnect Singaporeans to “an iconic Singapore treasure”.
So far, it seems to be working as an escape game enthusiast said that the game was “decently” challenging, and he would not have visited the park if not for the game.
What are you waiting for? Time to grab a group of friends and take a shot at this escape game this weekend!
