As of 30 Sep, over 9,209,201 doses of COVID-19 vaccines were administered under the national vaccination programme. These numbers include those that were vaccinated with the Pfizer-BioNTech/Comirnaty and Moderna/Spikevax (yes, the Moderna vaccine has a name too!) mRNA vaccines.
0.14% of these administered doses had a suspected adverse events (AEs) report. Of the 12,589 suspected AEs reports, 0.006% (581 reports), were categorised as serious AEs.
79% of the AEs were reported by individuals that were 60-years-old and under. 67% of these cases were women.
Serious Adverse Events & Adverse Events of Special Interest
Of the 9,209,201 doses of COVID-19 vaccines administered, there were 581 reports of serious AEs.
The most frequently reported serious AEs and AEs of special interest include:
- Anaphylaxis (rare and life-threatening allergic reaction) with 77 reports
- Severe allergic reactions with 52 reports
- Myocarditis or pericarditis (inflammation of the heart muscles and outer lining of the heart) with 81 reports following more than 8.9 million doses of mRNA vaccines in Health Science Authority’s (HSA) earlier reports
- Cerebral venous thrombosis (a rare type of blood clotting in the veins of the brain) with 10 suspected reports. None of them had a fatal outcome.
- Bell’s Palsy (causes temporary weakness or paralysis of the facial nerves) with 103 reports
- Syncope
- Limb numbness
- Weakness or pain
- Seizures (fits)
- Nerve inflammation
- Muscle injury
- Joint pain
- Blood clots
- Low platelets
- Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
- Changes in vision
- Increase in liver enzymes
- Thyroid gland dysfunction
- Abnormal renal function
- Menstrual disorder
- Severe skin reactions
- Infections
Most Commonly Reported Adverse Events
Aside from the serious AEs and AEs of special interests, there were a few commonly reported AEs as well. They are:
- Rash
- Hives
- Swelling of eyelids, face and lips
- Dizziness
- Shortness of breath
- Chest tightness/discomfort
- Palpitation
- Itchy skin
- Injection site reactions
- Fever
One of the most common AEs is the surfacing of rashes. 32.4% of the individuals experience these patches of itchy nightmares after they were jabbed.
Interestingly enough, getting a fever is one of the least common symptoms with only 2.8% of the individuals reporting the high temperature.
Do note that, an individual may report more than one AEs.
These reactions are usually resolved in a few days. Apparently, these allergic reactions are common and vaccinated individuals from different countries also reported similar AEs.
Sinovac-CoronaVac & Sinopharm COVID-19 Vaccines
Taking other vaccines other than mRNA vaccines because you love fake news?
Well, I hate to break it to you but if you took a COVID-19 vaccine through HSA’s Special Access Route (SAR), there’s still a chance of you suffering from AEs too.
As of 30 Sep, there’s a report of 111 suspected AEs among those that took the Sinovac-CoronaVac vaccines. There’s also a report of three suspected AEs reports from the 17,630 doses that were administered.
However, the low number does not mean that the vaccines under HSA’s SAR are better for they are not only administered to a very small proportion of the population, they are also administered at a different period.
Conclusion? The vaccines are still safe.
