Aerospace Companies Including Pratt & Whitney to Hire 1,000 People in S’pore Over the Next 2 Years

It’s been a tough year and a half for the aviation and aerospace sector.

Firms in the industry, including airlines and aircraft manufacturers, have been forced to lay off many of their employees in a bid to keep their companies afloat.

Now that leisure travel is gradually resuming around the world, this sector might finally be on the journey to recovery.

Aerospace Companies Including Pratt & Whitney to Hire 1,000 People in S’pore Over the Next 2 Years

Good news for those in the aerospace industry: companies in that sector are looking to hire 1,000 people in Singapore over the next two years.

This was the message Manpower Minister Tan See Leng conveyed today (11 Oct), which happens to be Aerospace Day 2021.

One such company on the lookout for new staff is the US-based firm Pratt & Whitney.

The aerospace manufacturer is reportedly looking to recruit 250 new employees by the end of 2021.

Last August, Pratt & Whitney had retrenched 400 staff at five of its six facilities in Singapore due to the economic impact of COVID-19.

At the time, it had employee around 2,000 workers in Singapore.

The company is now mostly looking for hourly workforce technicians and production associates, but also for salaried staff comprising degree and diploma holders.

The new staff members will either be taking on new roles or filling ones vacated by the 2020 retrenchments. The firm has already started hiring workers in the last few months.

Speaking about Pratt & Whitney, Mr Tan said: “Their cutting-edge aerospace technology capabilities will keep Singapore and our workers on the forefront of the global MRO industry.”

Other companies on the prowl for new talent include:

• business jet manufacturer Bombardier – 90 positions
• engine-maker and supplier GE Aviation – 200 positions
• Singapore Technologies (ST) Engineering – 200 positions
• Singapore Aero Engine Services – 170 positions

JTC also has vacancies for data analysts, robotics and automation engineers, and aircraft technicians, it said.

Full Recovery For International Aviation Sector By 2024?

Speaking to The Straits Times, Mr Tim Cormier, Pratt & Whitney’s vice-president of aftermarket operations in Asia-Pacific, predicted a full recovery for the international aviation sector by 2024.

Last Saturday (9 Oct), the COVID-19 task force announced that Singapore is extending its Vaccinated Travel Lane scheme to eight more countries.

From 19 Oct, vaccinated travellers will be able to fly to Canada, Denmark, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Britain, and the United States.

Singapore already has VTLs with Brunei and Germany, and another with South Korea that will launch next month.

Other countries, including the US, have recently opened their borders to international travellers too.

Let’s just hope that we won’t have to wait until 2024 to take that trip we’ve been planning since Dec 2019.
