Back in the 56K dial-up modem days, there was Sggirls.com (some people known it as SGirls), which, by the way, is still live but no longer has any images. It hasn’t been updated as well. Then Instagram came and some girls who didn’t want to appear in Sggirls.com (commonly just known to many as sg girls) appeared in their own Instagram account.
And of course, someone took notice of that phenomenon and started SGInstaBabes.
Needless to say, it went down as well. Just like Sggirls.com, the website’s still live but not active.
And now, as young people flock to Telegram, you can expect something like this to happen.
Now, before reading on, you need to know what Telegram is since not everyone uses it.
Telegram, The New Gram for the Kids
Do you know that social media in Singapore has its segregation now?
The older folks nowadays use Facebook and WhatsApp. The slightly younger ones use Instagram.
And the even younger ones, say, the teenagers?
Other than Instagram, they also go to Telegram and TikTok regularly.
In fact, one of my colleagues who’s not that young but pretends to be young says that Telegram is her main form of communication with her friends now.
Telegram works more like WhatsApp than Instagram, but there’s a feature that businesses like to use: Telegram channel. People can join the channel and the business can post messages there, kind of like Liking a Facebook Page or following an Instagram profile.
The reason why kids like Telegram is…erm, I don’t know. I’m not a youngster.
But according to my colleague, whom I shamelessly disturb on a weekend, she said that the main reason is that her friends are all using it. And she likes to join channels / groups that share memes, discount codes and whatnot.
SG Telebabes, The SG Girls Clone for Telegram
While the name sounds like a children’s programme you watched in the past, the purpose of it is way less innocent.
According to Asiaone, this group got under the spotlight after a victim posted a series of Instagram Stories to relate her experience.
She got suspicious after she received suggestive messages from people whom she didn’t know on Telegram.
Just so you know, you don’t need to know the contact number of a person to send a message; you just need to know the username.
Soon after, she realised that her photos have been shared on a Telegram channel called SG Telebabes without her knowledge.
I downloaded Telegram and tried searching for the channel but couldn’t find it. Either it’s private or it has been removed.
(I swear I’m doing that purely for work purposes)
She then realised that she’s not the only victim: the channel, which has 2.6K subscribers, had images of other young girls.
And to make matter worse, the photos came with the girls’ usernames.
Make Police Report
The lady, who’s 20 years old, proceeded to make a police report.
She told Asiaone, “It’s just really disturbing that there are over 2,500 people in the Telegram channel waiting on pictures of girls and their ID so they can DM (direct message) them to try and make whatever advances they intend to in their heads.”
Moral of the story?
Sggirls.com might be dead, SGInstababes might no longer be active, but as long as the Internet exists, SG TeleBabes or SG whatever would eventually come.
So use social media wisely.
