An Air India plane with at least 242 people on board crashed at the airport in Ahmedabad, a city in western India, on 12 June 2025.
Television reports confirmed the incident but did not provide information on casualties.
The aircraft, operating as Flight AI171, was en route to Gatwick Airport in London. Air India confirmed the destination in an official statement. Police said the crash occurred in a civilian area close to the airport.

Television channels reported that the crash happened during take-off. According to Flightradar24, the last signal from Flight AI171 was received at 08:08:51 UTC, which was 4:08 PM Singapore time. The signal came just seconds after the aircraft lifted off.
Flightradar24 identified the aircraft as a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, registered as VT-ANB.
Debris and Emergency Response at the Scene
Images shared online showed debris engulfed in flames and thick black smoke rising near the crash site. Several people were seen being carried away on stretchers and loaded into ambulances.
A total of 242 people were on board the flight, news agency ANI reported, citing Gujarat state’s police control room.
Airport Operations and Government Response
Ahmedabad airport has been temporarily closed to all flights, ANI News reported. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel expressed his sorrow on social media, stating that he was deeply saddened by the crash.
Patel said he had directed officials to begin immediate rescue and relief operations. He also instructed medical teams to treat and transport injured passengers without delay.
Air India said on its official X account that it is currently verifying the situation and will provide further updates when available.
