Despite red lights and green lights being arguably the most simple of traffic rules to understand, it seems people still violate them.
It may be understandable to cross a road with the red man present if there are no cars around, a busy intersection is less so.
Cyclist Hit by Car While Crossing Airport Road
On 31 July, in the early hours of 7 am, a car was waiting to make a right turn at the junction of Airport Road and Upper Paya Lebar Road.
The dashcam footage, uploaded to ROADS.sg, showed a cyclist rushing across the junction crossing despite the visible red man and oncoming vehicles.
The cyclist nearly made it, but right next to the kerb, a car collided with the bicycle and literally shattered it into pieces, roughly knocking the cyclist onto the side of Airport Road.
All the vehicles on the road slow down drastically, some switching lanes to avoid running the fallen cyclist over.
Several unrelated cyclists and pedestrians moved over to lend assistance, with the cyclist involved in the crash physically moving on the ground but appearing unable to get up.
As the video ends, a red car pulls over in front of the cyclist on the Airport Road lane, seemingly to help.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) told Goody Feed that they were alerted to the accident at around 7:00 am.
The SCDF then conveyed the injured cyclist to Changi General Hospital.
The police also reported that the 61-year-old driver involved in the collision was assisting with investigations.
As the driver moved off-screen following the crash, it cannot be confirmed if he stopped nearby as well.
Bicycle Riders Vulnerable in Road Accidents
Being on relatively flimsy and exposed transport, cyclists are very vulnerable in accidents with road vehicles.
An analysis of Singapore traffic accidents found that although motor car drivers are involved in road accidents around four times more than cyclists, they share similar fatality counts.
In 2023, a cyclist died following a hit-and-run on Nicoll Highway.
Since cyclists are all the more at risk in accidents, they should be more keenly aware of following the road rules to reduce risks, such as not crossing a junction during the red man.
The cyclist in the ROADS.sg video can thank his lucky stars that the collision wasn’t bad enough to be fatal.
