While new Covid-19 vaccines have been developed, and in some countries, distributed, it doesn’t mean the end of our troubles.
Currently, the two vaccines fastest in reaching the market is the Pfizer-BioNtech Covid-19 vaccine and Moderna’s Covid-19 vaccine.
Pfizer-BioNTech’s vaccine has been administered in both the UK and the United States.
On the first day of mass vaccination with the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine in the UK, the country released an advisory asking residents with a history of anaphylaxis to medicine or food not to get vaccinated.
The advisory comes after two people reported adverse effects on the first day of the mass vaccination.
Well, Moderna’s now jumped on the bandwagon.
A US Doctor Reported Allergic Reaction After Receiving Moderna Covid-19 Vaccine
On Thurs, 24 Dec 2020, Dr Hossein Sadrzadeh, a geriatric oncologist at Boston Medical Centre, reported experiencing severe allergic reaction moments after administering the Moderna vaccine.
The doctor, who reportedly has a shellfish allergy, felt dizzy and his heart racing.
According to a spokesperson for the centre, Dr Hossein was allowed to use his own personal EpiPen and was brought to the emergency centre for treatment and observation.
It was added that Dr Hossein is now “doing well”.
Moderna Looking Into The Matter
A spokesperson for Moderna, Ray Jordan, said that the company’s medical safety team would “look into the matter”.
The Federal Drug Administration also reportedly did not comment on the incident.
A spokesperson for the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Tom Skinner, said information on reactions to the new vaccines will be updated on their website starting next week.
It was also pointed out by an allergist and immunologist at Emory University, Dr Merin Kuruvillam that while more than 1.1 million injections have been carried out, severe allergic reactions are still a rarity.
It should not prompt concern in most people, he said.
Investigation Still Ongoing
Since the US distributed, and administered, Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine, there have been six reported cases of severe reactions due to the vaccine.

Currently, both the CDC and FDA are investigating the vaccine to try and identify if any specific ingredient within the vaccine caused the allergic reactions.
Meanwhile, the CDC also issued an advisory, warning that both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines might not be suitable for people with a history of anaphylaxis (severe reaction) to ingredients in the vaccines.
For those with other allergies, they can get their shots but should wait 15 minutes after the injection before leaving.
For those who previously suffered severe allergic reactions to substances, including injections or other vaccines, they should be monitored for an additional 15 minutes.
Meanwhile, an expert in Singapore is saying that more Singaporeans have to be vaccinated now that a Covid-19 case with UK’s variant of Covid-19 is discovered in Singapore.
