A chicken rice stall in Ang Mo Kio is turning heads with its rock-bottom prices.

How low?

Try $1.90 per plate and $8.80 for a whole soy chicken. Business is booming, and they’re dishing out 500 plates daily.

A “Makan Index 2.0” survey by the Singapore Policy Research Institute in 2023 pegged the average chicken rice price at $3.80.

But Nguan Express 88 at Block 704 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8 is selling soy chicken rice and roasted chicken rice at less than half that price.

The shop owner has three branches. Their first outlet in Jurong has been running for over 10 years. The Ang Mo Kio spot is their third location.

From AMK Hub to Heartland Block

Branch manager Lin Yixing (name transliterated from Mandarin), 43, shared with Sin Ming Daily News that they first opened in AMK Hub in late 2023. Sky-high rent pushed them to move to their current spot by the end of last year.

“We sold chicken rice at $3.80 originally,” Lin said. They dropped prices to $1.90 for soy chicken rice and roasted chicken rice just two weeks ago. The response? Immediate. Sales shot up from 200 plates daily to 500 now.

The deals don’t stop there. A whole soy chicken goes for $8.80 and comes with two cans of Coke thrown in.

The Secret Sauce Behind Low Prices

How do they keep prices so low when others can’t? Lin highlighted three reasons. The owner’s main business is importing meat. This gives them direct access to chicken supplies, cutting out middlemen.

Moving from AMK Hub chopped their rent bill almost in half. That’s a massive saving right off the bat.

“We believe in small profits, quick returns,” Lin explained. “These prices aren’t about crushing competition or making a killing. We just want folks to fill their bellies for under $2. About 70% of our customers are seniors who live nearby. Students and office workers appreciate these prices too.”

Yes, so if someone tells you that $2 can’t even get you a plate of chicken rice, you know what to say.
