When we head out to dine in at a restaurant with our friends or family, we have at least two basic expectations:
- That the food will be edible
- That the premises will be clean
The tastiness of a restaurant’s food doesn’t reflect how clean or dirty its premises are, so unless there are cockroaches and rats running around the dining area, we’d never know.
Fortunately for us, if there’s a dirty eatery out there, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) will find it.
SFA Suspends AMK Collin’s for 2 Weeks Due to Dirty Premises
The SFA has suspended the licence of Collin’s outlet at Ang Mo Kio for several hygiene lapses, it said in a news release.
The outlet, located in Jubilee Square Singapore at 61 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8, was suspended on Tuesday (24 Aug) and will only be allowed to reopen on 5 Sep.
SFA said the eatery accumulated 12 demerit points over a 12-month period for the following offences:
- Failure to keep licensed premises clean
- Failure to keep the air cleaning system clean and in good working order
- Failure to keep the air cleaning system clean and in good working order
Any licensee who accumulates 12 or more demerit points during a 12-month period, SFA said, may have their licence suspended for a period of either two or four weeks, or have it cancelled altogether.
In addition to the suspension, Colin’s was fined S$900.
Colin’s primarily serves Western food, but also has local fusion dishes such as Crispy Mala Chicken Wings.
Food Handlers Must Pass a Test Before Resuming Work
As with any other suspension, food handlers at Colin’s AMK outlet must re-attend and pass the Food Safety Course Level 1 before they can resume work as food handlers.
All food hygiene officers must also re-attend and pass the WSQ Conduct Food & Beverage Hygiene Audit Course to ensure that they are properly trained and qualified before the suspension is lifted.
“SFA takes a serious view of these offences and would like to remind food operators to observe good food and personal hygiene practices at all times, and to engage only registered food handlers,” the agency said.
“SFA will not hesitate to take firm action against anyone found to be in violation of the Environmental Public Health Act.”
Mee Pok Stall Closed For Two Weeks Due to Cockroach Infestation
Now it’s one thing if your restaurant is dirty, but another thing to have cockroaches all over your shop.
Earlier in June, Ah Lim Jln. Tua Kong Mee Pok was suspended for two weeks by the SFA for failing to keep its premises free of “cockroach infestation”.
Now there’s a phrase that’ll never fail to make my hairs stand on end.
The stall has now been guilty of this offence on two occasions. That’s why it was also fined S$800, in addition to the suspension.
SFA has advised diners who come across poor hygiene practices in eateries not to dine at such outlets, but to report them to the SFA instead.
