Remember Amos Yee, the “internet troll” who took things a little too far in Singapore and decided to “run” to the United States to maybe start anew?
Well, his new leaf was barely turned over before his old habits come crashing down on him. It seems that he is now facing the consequences of his bad habits – again.
Amos Yee Asked for Time to Talk to His ‘Loved Ones’ on a Special Prosecutor’s Offer
Yee, who is now in the United States, is facing 18 charges. The 18 charges include grooming, indecently soliciting a child and possession of child pornography.
He was given an offer by a special prosecutor, but the details of the offer were not disclosed.
Recently, Yee requested additional time to “talk to loved ones” about the offer from the special prosecutor. His request was granted and the offer was held open for a month.
He will return to court next month.
What was the offer?
Although the offer is not disclosed, here are some theories according to the US Department of Justice:
- A plea deal to avoid trial
- A deal to reduce his exposure to a more lengthy sentence
For this to happen, the defendant may only plead guilty if they actually committed the crime. They must also admit it in an open court before the judge. If they do plea guilty, there will not be any trial. Their next step will be headed for a sentencing hearing.
However, these are all theories from the cats that refused to catch the mice at Goody Feed.
What happened?
It all started in 2019, two years after Yee was granted asylum in the United States by the US immigration court, despite the opposition from the Department of Homeland Security.
In 2019, Yee exchanged nude photos and “thousands” of messages with a 14-year-old girl. He received nude photos of the underage girl and send her his nude photos as well. This happened between 1 Feb and 30 Jun.
When their relationship soured, the girl reached out to a group “interested in exposing pedophiles”.
He was arrested on 14 Oct 2020 by US Marshals in his apartment at Chicago’s Norwood Park East neighbourhood.
He had been in remand since his arrest, with a US$1 million bond. Since Yee is on an asylum status in the United States, he could lose his asylum status and be deported back to Singapore.
And should he be back in Singapore, you can bet that Mindef would be looking for him.
