If you were old enough to comprehend complete sentences in 2015, you probably know who Amos Yee is.
Yee was a Singaporean blogger who shot to fame after he made a video criticizing the late Lee Kuan Yew after he died.
He was subsequently arrested on multiple charges and was sentenced to jail, though he only ended up serving 53 days in remand.
What’s unique about Yee is his accent, which sounds like a mix of American and Donald Duck.
Yee is now back on the internet to bless our minds with his wise words, only this time he’s a Polocle, not a dissident.
Amos Yee, Who’s 21 Now, Calls Himself ‘Polocle’ and is Now a Blogger
Yee recently created a website called polocle.com where he blogs about a wide range of topics including politics, media, and fiction.
In one page titled “The Story of Amos Yee”, Yee recounts the events that led to his imprisonment in 2015.
The 21-year-old admitted that his famous video where he criticized Lee Kuan Yew was “mean-spirited” and “meandering” at times, but had “enough concise points about the unhappiness of Singaporeans and the government censoring the media and imprisoning political opponents”.
His video had reportedly garnered half a million views in a few days, which made him the focus of media attention.
Soon after, Yee was arrested.
According to The Straits Times, Yee was charged with uploading online materials intending to wound the religious feelings of Christians and making remarks on Lee Kuan Yew that offended people.
Yee said his arrest drew international attention, as he was reported on news outlets like CNN, BBC, The New York Times.
He also clarified that the image of him looking harrowed after he was released from jail was “faked” because a “traumatised face will stir more of a reaction than a neutral one.”
“That was fake, I made the conscious decision before I was let out to act absolutely wrecked, and the moment I entered a taxi away from the sight of any reporters, I immediately started laughing.”
Now, Yee says he will pen his opinions on his blog rather than discussing them in videos because writing seems more appealing to him at the moment.
He calls himself a “Polocle”, which is a combination or portmanteau of the words ‘Polymath’ and ‘Oracle’.
As Yee says: “Polymath” means a person whose knowledge spans a wide variety of subjects, and “Oracle”, meaning a giver of truth.
We are truly blessed to have someone with both these gifts.
Defends Paedophilia
Yee’s candid nature might be refreshing, but don’t be too quick to worship him as your defender of free speech because he’s also a defender of paedophilia.
According to AsiaOne, Yee has defended paedophiles in the past, including in three YouTube videos in 2017.
He once posted a picture of a young-looking girl on his Twitter account with the caption “How does one not become a paedophile?” leading to the suspension of his account.
In fact, his YouTube channel and social media accounts were all taken down because of this.
In his new blog Polocle, Yee also has a page titled “Why We Should Defend Paedophiles”, so while he claims to be the “giver of truth”, he may just be a narcissist with some troubling views.
