Did you ever notice one day that the food you used to enjoy when you were younger doesn’t really appeal to you anymore?
Suddenly they were either too sweet, salty or oily.
If you’ve got any of the “upgrades” listed below, congrats, you are officially an uncle/auntie!
From Starbucks’ Frappuccino to Kopi-O Kosong
Somehow, frozen flavoured coffees are not as effective as before in keeping you awake; plus they are suddenly too sweet for your tastebuds. They also make you feel even colder in your air-conditioned office. A nice cup of hot kopi-o from the coffee shop is much more comforting.
From Pancakes to Kaya Toast
During our schooling days, we have all probably eaten kaya toast for many mornings before we left the house. Kaya toast just brings back so many childhood memories. Pancakes? Yucks, it’s just toast that’s made with kaya, right?
From Eggs Benedict to Soft-Boiled Eggs
While eggs benedict tastes delicious with its creamy hollandaise sauce, not everyone knows how to recreate it. What everyone knows is that soya sauce, pepper and eggs can be easily found at home.
From Gelato to Traditional Ice-Cream
Nothing excites us more when we were kids than the ice-cream cart. After choosing your ice-cream flavour and choice of either wafer, bread or cone, the ice-cream uncle would reach into his cart and pull out a big block of ice cream. He would then cut a thick slab out. While gelatos are tasty (and supposedly healthier), they are way overpriced. And I won’t even want to talk about frozen yogurt.
From Pasta to Bak Chor Mee
Nothing cuts it like a good bowl of bak chor mee which didn’t cost at least $8 like its Italian counterpart.
From Bubble Tea to Teh-C
Bubble tea used to be our go-to drink after school every day. However, with age, our metabolism slows and this does not bode well for our waistline. A nice hot cup of Teh-C will do, or if you still prefer something cold, a Teh-C Peng.

From Artisan Bread to Gardenia Bread
We can never get used to sourdough, bagels and country bread from the Westerners; just like how they can never get used to our pork floss buns and sliced bread. Plus, buying a loaf of Gardenia bread is so easy since it’s available in so many supermarkets and minimarts. There are even vending machines that sell it! Breakfast settled.
From Hot Chocolate to Milo
Because hot chocolate is just a fancy form of Milo. Why should we pay $5 for the former and $1 for a cup of Milo? Plus, Marie biscuits don’t taste as nice dipped in hot chocolate as compared to Milo.
From Western Cakes to Old School Cakes?
As people age, it seems that all we want to do is reminiscent about the memories of yesteryears. What’s better than doing that over a slice of old school cream cake?
From White Rice to Brown Rice
From doctors to health-related TV shows, the common topic seems to be that unrefined food is better for us. With unclehood/auntiehood, we tend to be more health conscious. Since rice is our main staple, swapping it to something healthier makes the biggest change to our diet. Right, it doesn’t taste as good, but as we get older, we don’t live to eat, but eat to live, eh?
