This Angmoh Compared Living in S’pore & Sweden in a Video & S’poreans are Not Impressed

Recently, a video comparing living in Singapore and in Sweden has been making its rounds on social media platforms. The man behind it is an expat who migrated here from his birthplace, Sweden. According to the video, life is a lot easier in Singapore, for various reasons.

Take a look below.

That’s all well and good, and I believe it’s quite heartening to hear nice things about our own country. However, it seems the stereotype of the complaining Singaporean isn’t too far removed from the truth, as this video —the video that was extolling the positives of living in Singapore— drew quite an amount of ire.

What?

Guys, this man is saying it’s better to stay in Singapore than in Sweden, not the other way around! To be fair, not everyone has it all perfect here (as it is everywhere in the world), but he literally just compared some aspects of living here with living in Sweden, and found Singapore better.

Let’s take a look at some of the complaints.

The main issue people had with Mr Expat over here is financial ability. According to many of the commenters, apparently our Swedish friend felt it was easier to live here only because he had a good salary, and could afford to.

I’m not going to deny that you’re going to need a decent income to live comfortably, but looking at the examples Stefan (that’s the Swede behind the videos) raised, for example the controlled housing market or the accessibility of affordable food, it does seem easier to live in Singapore than in Sweden.

The point was never about how Singapore is the best place to live in, merely that he found it easier to live here than Sweden.

It is understandable for people to be upset with the associated troubles of a lower income, but it seems to me that that was never the point of the video. Unless, of course, the argument is about how you could live better with a lower income in Sweden. This was curiously and conspicuously not present. Go figure.

We all probably need to slow down, take a deep breath, maybe appreciate what we have, and not completely miss the point of videos that are meant to make us feel better.
