Not all stepmothers are evil, despite Cinderella telling you otherwise.
They’re usually nice women who want to play nice with their step-children so that they can be accepted into the family faster.
But once in a while, you’d come across a case like this.
Stepmother Kills Stepdaughter’s Parrot Named Lucky
Okay, a bit of context here.
Ms Yu Mei Ling’s father gave her a 1-year-old Sun Conure parrot, which her father named lucky so it’ll bring them luck.
It lived with the family for six years before it died, and both Ms Yu and her father missed Lucky terribly.
So when Ms Yu bought a five-week-old Sun Conure parrot for her father last December, he gave the parrot the name, Lucky.
They had even sought agreement from the stepmother before bringing the parrot into the family.
But This Time, Lucky Wasn’t So…Lucky
Sorry, couldn’t resist the pun. But unlike its predecessor, Lucky, which managed to live for 6 years, this parrot didn’t live past a single year.
On 27 Oct 2017, Ms Yu was carrying Lucky (the new one) on her shoulder in the living room.
When her stepmother, 38-year-old Tran Thi Thuy Hang walked past the pair, the parrot suddenly flew towards her and bit her on the right cheek.
Ms Yu was shocked by the parrot’s actions.
“He is not aggressive at all”, she said.
She claimed that neighbours played with the parrot all the time and nothing happened.
She immediately ran into her room and complained to her husband, Mr Yu Ching Meng, who remarried in 2005.
Get The Parrot Out Of The House, Or I’ll Kill It
She demanded that they get the parrot out of the house immediately or she would kill it.
And true to her words, after Mr Yu and his daughter left the house at around 8 am the next day, she attacked the parrot.
She opened the parrot’s cage and used a bamboo laundry pole to hit the bird several times until it died.
When Mr Yu got back from his breakfast, she showed him the carcass of the bird and told him what she did.
Then, she threw the carcass together with the cage down the central rubbish chute.
Stepdaughter Calls The Police and AVA
Initially, Ms Yu did not want to report the case to the relevant authorities. However, when she saw that her stepmother did not regret her actions, she decided to do so.
Tran pleaded guilty to ill-treating Lucky last month and was sentenced to four weeks’ jail on 1 Aug.
District Judge Adam Nakhoda said that Tran Thi Thuy Hang’s actions were calculated and deliberate.
For animal cruelty, she could’ve been jailed up to 18 months and given a maximum fine of $15,000.
Netizens’ Reactions
When it comes to bird and killings, everybody’s bound to get excited about it.
One took the chance to advocate for other birds
And others just felt that the sentence is a lil bit too light
Some are just shocked at what this step-momma can do.
But surprise, surprise, you can actually find level-headed people among netizens
What do you think?
As for Ms Yu, she’s just glad that the case is closed.
