Okay, so it goes again.
In case you’ve forgotten, about half a year ago, a BMW driver got into the headline for all the wrong reasons: he allegedly told a pump attendant to pump $10 worth of petrol, the pump attendant pumped full tank instead to a bill of $135, the driver refused to pay the extra $125 and people were angry that the 60-year-old pump attendant might have to fork out the remaining $125.
Turned out that the pump attendant need not pay the difference but netizens still weren’t happy: they CSI-ed the driver out and posted his details online.
The driver eventually had to lodge a police report as he was concerned about his family’s safety. It was finally ruled out as a miscommunication and life goes on.
Now even if you’ve a goldfish memory, this new allegation is going to remind you of the online manhunt that happened in April this year.
Another Person Allegedly Did a “$10 BMW”
This time round, it happened in an Esso station and the driver isn’t driving a BMW but a Mitsubishi Lancer.
From the image, it looks like it’s a private-hire car.
Here’s the allegation:
If you can’t read, here’s what the Facebook user has written (quite a wall of text):
So earlier at 5.40ish pm today, i was at esso along telok blangah towards harbourfront to pump my petrol. While at the counter to make payment, the uncle in front of me had a dispute with the cashier. He had claimed that he only asked for $30 worth of petrol while the pump attendant had pumped full tank. This is a repeat of the fuel 10/full tank incident- remember the $10 bmw guy? The cashiers told me that the pump attendant REPEATEDLY asked him how much he wanted to pump and he said full tank. However at the cashier, he insisted that he only asked for $30. When the cashiers asked him to speak with the manager, he refused! Why would a person who claims he is right not want to speak to the higher authority?? Seems suspicious right..And aft 10% discount he paid $27 for $90 worth of petrol. When the pump attendant attended to me, he repeated aft me too..im sure this is a protocol to prevent such disputes especially after the $10 bmw guy’s story went viral..The poor pump attendant will have the $60 deducted off his pay i was told. The pump attendant looked a bit special to me (minor autism or minor down syndrome look- im not sure this part and im not being judgemental. This is just a guess. He could be normal.) But the uncle probably thought he could make a fool out of other people. Seriously if there were 10 of such others, how much would be deducted from the pump attendant’s pay. They are not earning much to begin with..How can we ensure that this does not happen to them? Record the convo before pumping in case of dispute?? Collect the amount first before pumping?? This is absolutely ridiculous to me. Uncle, so u got free petrol ah? Does that make u happy while making others miserable. Damn asshole right. Do grab on free petrol by fooling the pump attendant?
(Please help to share this post in the hopes that the poor pump attendant will not be penalised and that he need not pay the $60 difference.)
So basically, here’s what allegedly happened:
- Pump attendant pumped $90 worth of petrol (full tank)
- At the checkout area, the driver claimed he told the pump attendant to pump only $30
- The cashier claimed that the pump attendant had repeatedly ask the driver if he wanted “full tank”
- The cashiers suggested that the driver speak to the manager but the driver refused
- According to the Facebook user, the pump attendant had also repeated the order when she “ordered” her petrol
Now, it’s said that the guy paid $27 after discount.
You’d have also noticed we’ve blanked out all the names and plates involved. Read on and you’ll understand.
Pump Attendant Need Not Pay the Difference
According to Shin Min Daily News, ExxonMobil and FairPrice have investigated the incident, and that the pump attendant need not top up the difference from his own pocket.
They claimed that it is rare for such incident to occur, but should it happen, they’ll look into each incident fairly.
Suffice to say, it has a happy ending.
I know it’s tempting to CSI the guy out, but maybe you should read on first.
The $10 BMW Driver is a Lesson
Despite what you think, whether the BMW driver is in the wrong or not, you can’t deny that in any case, it’s still a one-sided story.
According to a report, the BMW driver has given his side of the story: the pump attendant had allegedly shouted at him, and the pump attendant was the one who told the driver to pay just $10 and he would pay the remaining amount.
But it doesn’t matter whose fault it is: it seems like netizens just dislike the fact that a rich man (BMW driver) is bullying a poor man (pump attendant). Logic got thrown out and that was how everything got viral.
So, what are we to do with this new story?
It has definitely gone viral, with over 1.4K Shares on the post.
Let’s not make this into another $10 BMW driver. Instead, let’s learn from this: if you’re going to pump a certain amount instead of full tank, say it clearly and loudly. If need to, just stand beside the car to confirm.
