Sleeping is an important activity that our bodies require, besides giving our minds time to relax and process information, it also gives our body the opportunity to repair itself and giving us enough energy to do more when we wake up.
It was proven that you require at least 8 hours of sleep daily in order to let your body repair and recharge itself adequately, and if you consistently have lesser sleep than that, you might experience symptoms like lethargy, increased stress levels and sometimes, even get diabetes.
An app created by a team of researchers at the University of Michigan called Entrain was used to track the sleep patterns of individuals globally. The results collected from this app has shown that women generally get more sleep than men and globally, the countries with the most sleep are countries such as the Netherlands and New Zealand.
The results have indicated that the Dutch and New Zealanders generally get more than an hour’s sleep as compared to countries such as Singapore, which was ranked bottom in the findings.
Some might not be surprised at the findings, given that we are the most unhappy people on earth with one of the highest in terms of stresses and pace of our working environment (Don’t believe us? Just make your way to the CBD at 8 pm and you’ll probably be able to see some office workers still working.)
But of course, the lack of sleep might be due to the lifestyles of Singaporeans as well. As a bustling metropolis with well-developed networks, most of us will probably forgo sleep to have a wild night at the clubs or just chiong through Korean dramas like no tomorrow.
Either that or our love of chilling and eating late-night suppers far surpass our love for sleep (because who doesn’t like sleeping?!).
Whichever your reason is, you might want to consider stopping (or at least reduce the frequency of staying up late at night) because it has much more dire consequences than you might have expected.
