If a friend were to ask you when you last exercised, you’d probably say yesterday, even though Barack Obama was still the US President when you last went for a run.

Most of us have fully committed to the hermit life and stayed holed up in our rooms ever since the coronavirus emerged.

After months of binge-watching, binge-eating, and binge-napping, exercising under the unforgiving sun or even in an air-conditioned gym seems like a fate worse than death.

But, as medical experts keep telling us, exercise, along with a healthy diet, can help boost our immune system, which is crucial at such a time.

Reader: I’d love to run but I’m wary of removing my mask while running, because I might contract Covid-19.

That excuse might have worked in the past, dear reader, but not any more.

Asics Coming Out with a ‘Runners Face Cover’ That’s More Breathable

The only time residents in Singapore are allowed to remove their masks in public is when they are engaging in strenuous exercise like running.

This is because running with a face mask on is like trying to ride a bicycle with a pillow wrapped around your face; it’s hard.

In fact, a man from Wuhan died in May from a collapsed lung after he ran with his face mask on.

Fortunately, Asics have come up with a solution to this problem.

The Japanese sportswear company have created a mask that allows runners to breathe normally while running.

Designed by renowned scientists and engineers at the Asics Institute of Sport Science, its unique curved design “enhances breathability, comfort and performance for runners.”

The face mask, which Asics calls “revolutionary”,  pairs cutting-edge design with innovative air vents that give runners the room to breathe comfortably, while preventing the spread of droplets.

Here are some of the unique technological and design features of the mask, courtesy of Asics:

  • Interior space creates more room inside the mask to allow for easier breathing when running
  • Strategically-placed air vents on the masks increase airflow while preventing the spread of droplets
  • Quick-drying fabric cools the air flowing into the mouth and helps reduce the risk of heat stroke.
  • Comfort fit specifically designed to accommodate a wide range of faces with an adjustable fit
  • Sustainable design which was produced with approximately 31% recycled materials

But the most interesting and perhaps confusing feature of this mask is its… drinkability.

Allows Wearer to Drink Water

In its lengthy description of the new mask, Asics claimed the mask “even allows runners to drink water while running.”

Does this mean that runners can literally drink water through the mask? If so, wouldn’t that defeat the purpose of wearing the mask?

Nothing like a refreshing cup of coronavirus after a run.

Or is the mask so advanced that it filters out the viruses but not water?

These are the questions that will plague humanity until a runner actually wraps one of these masks around her face.

If one day, a company manages to create a mask that allows you to eat your Wanton Mee and Prata through it too, we might have to keep our masks on for 24 hours a day, possibly until we die.

Price

Good-quality items don’t come cheap, though. According to Nylon SG, Asics’s new mask will set you back a staggering $55.

This is exactly $55 more than the resuable masks given to you by the government, which was absolutely free.

But, if you’ve been dying to drink water through your mask while running, you’ll be able to purchase this pricey mask at asics.com/sg from October 2020.
