It’s tough being a superhero.
But as taxi drivers would probably tell you, being a commercial chauffeur is even harder.
I mean sure; they get to sit on their ass all day in the comfort of an air-conditioned environment, but at the same time they also have to deal with:
- Unreasonable riders
- Traffic jams
- Unreasonable riders
- Holding their shit in for long rides
- Unreasonable riders
- My colleague who looks like this:
And lest you’ve not gotten it, unreasonable riders sit pretty high atop that list of cons that come with their “comfortable” sounding job. And for good reason too. Some scowl at you like you’ve killed their family members with a see-saw; some talk so darn loudly on their phones it’s like your taxi’s their temporary hotel room; some even try to poke you while you’re driving, because they’re high.
So… tough? Tough.
But even so, none compares to this particular rider, who seems to have the impression that taxi drivers are actual human incarnates of Google Maps.
I mean, why else…
Would she think that “Along the road in Serangoon North where there are a lot of animals” is an actual plausible drop-off location?
She Who Must Not Be Named
Have you ever been scolded because someone gave you really vague instructions and expected you to know it? Yes? No?
Well, depending on the answer, you might or might not empathise with this taxi driver, who was scolded by his rider for not knowing how to go to a road in Serangoon North “where there are a lot of animals”.
The incident, having been caught on video, was subsequently uploaded on Facebook page Roads.sg on Monday (15 Oct).
According to the time stamp in the video, the incident occurred on 12 Oct at around 1:00 p.m., although the exact location of the incident is not clear.
This is a rough layout of what exactly happened in the vehicle. Warning: it might be ‘triggerous’, so please take caution, and proceed only at your own risk.
In the video, the driver can be heard asking her for her drop-off location. In reply, the rider answered: “Along the road in Serangoon North where there are a lot of animals.”
Naturally, the driver was totally bamboozled at this point, and so he tried clarifying the exact location. However, this just served to incite a rather harsh scolding.
“How would I know which Avenue is it at exactly?”
“It’s the road at Serangoon North with a lot of animals!”
“As a taxi driver, you should know the way instead of asking me. I’ve already mentioned to you, it’s the road at Serangoon North with a lot of animals!”
And as if that wasn’t enough, she insulted the driver’s mother by saying “Your Mother!” in Mandarin to him.
This irritated the driver, who replied by cursing her back.
At this, the rider reiterated that she didn’t know which Avenue it was at exactly, and complained in an almost whiny tone that he, as a taxi driver, should know where the road with a lot of animals should be.
Where Exactly is the Place with A Lot of Animals?
Surprisingly, I asked everyone in the office and one of them know where it is (the rest just wondered if the zoo has bought a BTO in Serangoon).
“Serangoon with lots of animal?” my ugly colleague who looked like Andy Lau said. “Is it that central with lots of pet shops and a Thai restaurant?”
We were all puzzled at how he knew: he then Googled and said, “Yah, correct. Serangoon North Ave 1. It’s place with many pet shops, a Thai restaurant, a hawker or coffeeshop and there’s a CC beside it. The car park is always full one. Eh, Zhi Hao, there’s a pet shop there that sells very cheap dog food leh. You want to buy some for yourself to eat?”
Ahh. The most shocking fact is that he doesn’t live in Serangoon. So we told our boss that this colleague of ours has been moonlighting as a private hire driver, and most importantly, he has a skill: he knows where where is “Serangoon with lots of animal”.

Dissent
The video, which went viral with over 65K views and counting, saw many Netizens stepping forth to give the rider a ‘piece of their mind’.
And some empathised with the driver.
Although you don’t really see anyone empathising with the rider, save for maybe this more ambiguous one.
Ah. So it’s not just my colleague who knows that. Someone else knows it as well.
Taxi Drivers are underrated
In fact, I would go so far as to say that they are superheroes. Except without the capes.
So guys, let’s all be thankful to the taxi drivers we hail from hereon, because honestly without them…
Life just sucks.
