Expert Committee Advises Younger Men to Avoid Strenuous Physical Activity for a Week After 2nd COVID-19 Dose

There’s a new advisory in town, and this one may not bode well for certain exercise fanatics out there.

According to several reports, the expert committee for Covid-19 vaccination has issued a recommendation:

Adolescents, as well as younger men, should try to abstain from intense physical activity for at least a week after their second dose.

And the reason why?

Apparently, several men have reportedly sustained myocarditis or pericarditis after receiving their second jab.

So to those with viral baby-making plans, you may have to wait for a week.

Expert Committee Advises People to Avoid Strenuous Physical Activity for a Week After 2nd COVID-19 Dose

On 11 June 2021, the Ministry of Health released an advisory asking certain demographics to abstain from intense physical activity, for a week after their second jab.

Examples? Well, we’re speculating HIIT, long-distance runs and erm, perhaps your routine bedroom activity.

Such as reading a children’s book to sleep.

According to the news release, the recommendation was made under one particular observation: that the second dose of vaccines may actually be linked to myocarditis and pericarditis.

Lest you’re unaware, they are inflammatory conditions that affect the heart muscles and the outer lining of the heart, with myocarditis causing the first and pericarditis the latter.

Touted to be more prevalent in men as compared to women, patients are normally afflicted with symptoms such as:

  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Unusual heartbeats

Though there may be a rare case wherein the heart muscles get damaged, most cases are believed to be mild in nature.

Nevertheless, even the most minimal risk should be circumvented, and “adolescents and younger men” have thus been advised to follow the newest advisory.

Cases

As of 7 June 2021, 4 local cases afflicted with myocarditis or pericarditis have been reported.

They were all men aged 18 to 30, who went through their second jab of the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines.

And just yesterday (11 June 2021), another two cases, revolving around a man and women above 40, were reported.

“Most of the cases were reported to have occurred within a few days after receiving the second dose of the vaccine,” HSA said.

All the affected personnel have either recovered or left their hospitals.

More studies and investigations are currently pending.

Meanwhile, cases have also been observed overseas.

The symptoms appear to be prevalent amongst adolescents and young men under 25, with instances documented in Israel and the United States.

“The risk of this has been estimated to be 1.6 cases per 100,000 doses for mRNA vaccines in the US, which is comparable to the risk of anaphylaxis (severe allergic reactions) observed in Singapore,” the committee said.

Vaccination also remains highly encouraged.

“Our assessment is that the benefits of receiving the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines, i.e., reduction in COVID-19 infections and severe complications even if infected, continue to outweigh the risks of vaccination,” the committee added.
