A long time ago, someone told me:

“Superheroes are fake. They only exist in movies. Get a grip.”

But I disagreed. Sure, maybe only superheroes in movies possess unbelievable powers. Like Superman. Captain Marvel. Hawkeye. But in the end, superheroes are so much more than the abilities they hold at their fingertips.

It’s also about their valour. Mentality. Spirit.

And as this article serves to show us…

Superheroes exist all around us.

You just don’t know it till it happens.

A Burning House

On 29 July, a fire broke out in the living room of a woman’s terrace house in Johor, Malaysia.

Two toddlers, who happened to be under her care, were stuck inside. One of them is her own granddaughter.

According to China Press, the babysitter had gone to buy breakfast while the children nestled in the master bedroom.

When she returned, however, a fire had broken out.

She Would Not Be Stopped

Intending to save the girls, the woman found herself being restrained by passers-by.

“Mum was so worried about the children, she kept asking me ‘what to do?'” said the woman’s youngest son, who rushed home after learning about the fire.

The 31-year-old attempted to get inside the house, but he failed to get past the flames in the living room. Searching for another way in, he eventually reached the back of the house via his car and found his neighbours trying to douse the fire with water.

Unbeknownst to him, however, his mother had dashed into the blaze.

A true heroine

When he finally managed to enter the house, he found his mother sitting on the floor with the toddlers.

She was shielding them from the flames and had sustained burns on 80 per cent of her body, including her face, limbs, chest and back.

While one of the children suffered burns on her legs, the other was ultimately unharmed.

Once the toddlers were carried to safety with the help of others, the son dragged his mother out of the blazing house.

She was rushed to a private hospital. Due to the severity of her injuries, however, she had to be transferred to a public hospital.

She died the next day.

According to her son, she had plans to retire after the current batch of kids. She had been babysitting for the past 24 years and was apparently looking forward to enjoying her golden years.

“Being a babysitter involves great pressure,” he recalls his late mum saying. “Others trust you, and let you take care of their children.”

She reportedly remembers each and every child she has taken care of, up until the day she passed on.

A true professional in all aspects, right to the very end. And forgive me if I’m wrong…

But she has shown us all that being a superhero doesn’t require laser eyes or the power of flight; what it truly requires…

Is true dedication, and a heart of gold.
