Baking Supplies Running Out of Stock Fast as People Hoard Them Ahead of Hari Raya Aidilfitri
At the Phoon Huat outlet in Toa Payoh, a paper outside the shop said that baking powder, baking soda and cocoa powder are out of stock.
Similarly, in grocery stores and supermarkets around Singapore, you can see a lot of empty shelves in the baking section.
With people having more time on their hand, they’re now turning to baking-related activities during the Circuit Breaker period.
The baking frenzy is also partly caused by the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri, which falls on 24 May 2020.
FairPrice reported an increase of about “three-fold” for their baking products and a jump of 80% in their sales in the “weeks leading up to Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
The Source Bulk Foods, a grocery store, sells about 25kg of flour daily, five times their usual amounts.
There’s Still Enough Stock
The problem is getting it up onto the shelves.
Supermarket chains are desperately trying to restock their shelves to keep up with a demand that’s never been seen before.

Fairprice has been ramping up supplies and has been purchasing from a wider pool of suppliers to offer even more alternatives.
Phoon Huat says that when it comes to basic supplies like flour and sugar, “there’s no problem”.
The problem, they said, is the retail packing process which they are trying to increase their capacity for.
So please don’t chiong to the baking outlets or supermarkets now because you can’t live without baking.
There is still enough stock. They just need time to get it up onto the shelves.
