A rental HDB flat left vacant for two weeks became the source of a massive bedbug infestation, affecting at least seven neighbouring households.

The bugs crawled into adjacent units, forcing authorities to step in with pest control measures.

Mr. Zhang (name transliterated from Mandarin), 40, informed Shin Min Daily News that on 13 Apr 2025, a large number of bedbugs suddenly appeared in the corridor.

Many crawled into his home, covering his walls, sofa, and bed.

“I looked around and found that the bedbugs were coming from a neighbour’s unit on the same floor. That neighbour suddenly left home a few days before the incident, and the bedbugs even ran into neighbours’ homes on both sides of the corridor,” he said.

When reporters visited the site, they found many dead bedbugs in front of the unit and water traces throughout the corridor.

Neighbours Describe Nightmare Situation

Jaya (name transliterated from Mandarin), 58, a neighbour living opposite the vacant unit, complained that her home was indeed filled with numerous bedbugs during that period.

At one point, she found 40 to 50 bugs, with some already laying eggs on her furniture.

“Bedbugs crawled onto my bed and bit me. I couldn’t sleep for days and had to take leave from work,” she said.

She admitted the water in the corridor was her doing, an attempt to stop bedbugs from entering her home. She also stuffed towels into door gaps to block the bugs, but these methods proved largely ineffective.

Next-door neighbour Jiang Huiqing (name transliterated from Mandarin), 78, a retiree, suffered similar torment. She recalled, “That neighbour is quite nice and seems to keep cats at home.”

Downstairs resident Yati (name transliterated from Mandarin), 50, a housewife, revealed that she recently felt itchy all over before discovering many bedbugs had entered her home through the windows.

“The bedbug bites made it hard for me to sleep at night,” she said.

At least seven neighbouring units were affected, with residents at their wits’ end. According to Shin Min Daily News, authorities later sent personnel to fumigate the affected units.
