It is not uncommon to walk past your neighbourhood’s basketball court and see a couple of teens playing basketball, battling it out and giving their all to have a good sweat and a good game.
What’s uncommon is to see the place fully littered with no one using it afterward.
What do I mean?

Look at that mess.
According to Redditor u/TheRookieGetsACookie, this was taken at Bishan Blk 112 basketball court this past weekend.
It seems that the teens who frequent this basketball court left the remains of their food and drinks there without bothering to clean it up. This would have made it difficult for others who would like to use the basketball court for activities.
According to the Redditor who took the photo, there are many trash bins nearby that they could have disposed of their trash in, but they chose not to do so.
A bit too early for this on a weekend. Bishan Block 112 basketball court. We encourage you to throw your garbage in the bins, there’s one in every corner. from r/singapore

Many Singaporean Redditors chimed in and talked about how this behaviour was very inconsiderate.
One of them pointed out that this was a common sight amongst those who used basketball courts. There was also mention of the basketball court being newly renovated with CCTVs installed, but sadly, this behaviour continued.
Some Redditors said that it was common knowledge to clear up the mess you’ve made before you leave.

Others said that there is absolutely no excuse for one to litter and that even if there was no trash bin around, one should have the decency to carry your trash with you until you find one.
One Redditor said that he or she was willing to help clean up if given some cleaning supplies. But the Redditor who posted the photo, u/TheRookieGetsACookie, mentioned that he and his friends do clean up the court whenever they play there and see the mess.
It is nice to know that there are people in Singapore who would clean up after others, but that does not mean that we should solely rely on them to clean up after our mess. We should be responsible for our own trash.
Littering Fines?
As of now, National Environment Agency (NEA) states that those who have been caught littering will be fined $300.
Perhaps there is a need for stricter rules on littering in order to deter these people from leaving their trash everyone. According to what was being said, it seems that those who littered the court were secondary school students.

Maybe more has to be done in schools to ensure that these students do not litter again.
One Redditor mentioned that if this was in Kranji, the litterbugs would be identified and advertised to the public to make sure that they will never commit the same offence again.
Hopefully with this callout, fewer people will litter and more people will learn to keep their neighbourhoods clean.
Basketball courts are public spaces and they should be kept clean for everyone’s usage. Please do not be inconsiderate and leave your trash there, hoping that someone else would clean it for you.
Let’s work towards a cleaner and greener Singapore together!
