Tyres aren’t an uncommon sight on Singapore’s expressways. Unless, of course, they’re not attached to a vehicle.
Motorcyclists Escort Loose Tyre Off BKE
On 27 July, Facebook page Singapore roads accident.com posted a video, showing a loose tyre rolling along at high speeds on the Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE).
Moving at speeds comparable to all the vehicles around, the tyre posed a serious safety risk if it ever hit a car or motorcycle from behind.
Thankfully, two everyday heroes showed up on their motorcycles. One of them drove up on the right side of the tyre, which was zooming straight ahead on the first and second lanes on the BKE.
Carefully, he pulled close enough to give it a good kick, shifting its direction without knocking it over.
Carried by its momentum, the tyre drifted across the entire expressway to the left, and both motorcycles followed along, escorting it like it were the President’s state car.
The one right behind the loose rubber wheel put a hand out to signal to vehicles to stay back.
They slid across the lanes in unison which would have put our National Day Parade performers to shame.
The bus the footage was filmed from and another car on the leftmost lane slowed down to give the motorcyclists their space, and they successfully brought the wheel off the left road shoulder.
Netizens Praise Their Kindness in Preventing Accidents
Quite rightfully, netizens praised the two motorcyclists in the video’s comments, both for their actions and their riding skills. The post gained 6.8 thousand likes at press time.
Another commended their good deeds, seemingly an increasing rarity as dashcam videos frequently capture terrible driving or angry motorists.
They recommended the Land Transport Authority (LTA) give them an award.
The two motorcyclists did go above and beyond to prevent an accident.
Nobody would have blamed them if they ignored it, as diverting the rogue tyre put their lives at serious risk.
A quick search on YouTube readily shows how erratic and dangerous loose tyres can be, and the motorcyclist was kicking it while travelling at the same speed.
Nevertheless, the two of them put themselves at risk and prevented a serious accident.
For anyone underestimating the danger of a runaway tyre, take a look at what happened in California last year.
Somehow the driver made it out of that impromptu car trampoline with minor injuries.
Similar accidents have happened in Singapore as well. In 2021, a loose tyre flew off a heavy vehicle and smashed into a car on the PIE.
As a last point about the escorting motorcyclists, the Facebook post claimed that one was a Singaporean and the other a Malaysian motorcyclist.
As the footage quality is too low, this cannot be confirmed, but netizens wrote comments about how compassionate people are not identified by nationality or ethnicity.
A welcome change from the all-too-common prejudice shown on social media.
