As the Chinese saying goes, a road is as dangerous as a tiger’s mouth (马路如虎口).
Unfortunately, for an 80-year-old cardboard collector, he found out about this the hard way when he found himself knocked to the ground by a bus while cycling.
Not even the cardboard he was collecting managed to soften his fall.
An accident involving a bus and a bicycle
The accident took place on 9 Apr at around 4:48pm on Boon Keng Road, near the exit leading towards Bendemeer Road.
As reported to Shin Min Daily (新明日报) via their 24-hour hotline, the witness was driving by when he saw the cardboard collector uncle lying on the right side of the road.
His bicycle was crushed under the bus.
The old man looked to be in incredible pain.
According to the witness, he saw two young men trying to help the old man while another person stood nearby to call for help.
The police and ambulance arrived promptly at the scene and the uncle was subsequently sent to Raffles Hospital.
The police also talked to the bus driver involved in the accident and took his statement.
The driver was standing beside the bus and he looked extremely anxious.
When contacted, SMRT confirmed that their bus (Number 985) was involved in a traffic accident with a male cyclist.
The company has already reached out to the cyclist and his immediate family to provide assistance.
They are also assisting the police in their investigation.
When a reporter was dispatched to the site, he noted that the bike has already been moved to the side of the road.
The carrier part of the crushed bicycle is also stacked with cardboard, as reported by the witness, and the cardboard looked damp.
Authorities are currently investigating the accident.
Singaporean laws regarding cycling on the road
By Singaporean law, cyclists are not allowed to cycle on the right side of the road. They are supposed to cycle on the far left side of the road instead.
However, as seen from the photo taken by the witness, the cardboard collector uncle seemed to have been cycling on the right side of the road.
Under the Road Traffic Act, it is also compulsory for cyclists to wear a helmet when riding their bikes on the road.
It is uncertain if the uncle wore one before he fell.
That being said, we’ll just have to wait for the police to conclude their investigation to know who’s actually at fault here.
