A 65-year-old man passed away in his Ang Mo Kio flat alone, and his body wasn’t discovered until nearly one week later.

When his girlfriend, a 60-year-old woman, couldn’t reach him, she assumed he was hospitalised.

60YO Woman Discovers 65YO Boyfriend Died Alone in AMK Flat

On Thursday (8 June), authorities found a man dead, alone, in his residence at Block 645, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 6.

The deceased was a 65-year-old man whose body was found nearly a week after he passed away—even his girlfriend didn’t know.

According to Shin Min Daily News, the police had cordoned off the area around the deceased’s unit, and there was a pungent stench coming from the unit.

The smell was so pungent that aside from merely shutting their doors and windows, residents were seen spraying air fresheners.

Deceased’s Girlfriend Lost Contact With Him; Assumed He Was Hospitalised

At this point, you might be wondering—why didn’t anyone find it strange that the deceased was uncontactable for nearly a week?

According to the deceased’s 60-year-old girlfriend, Chen (hanyu pinyin), she had tried to contact the deceased over the past week.

She couldn’t reach him.

However, she recounted a previous incident where the 65-year-old was uncontactable as he was hospitalised. Thus, she assumed this was a similar situation.

While she did try contacting the hospital, she could not verify if her boyfriend was indeed hospitalised as she did not have his identification number.

See, although the pair had been together for over ten years, there was still some distance between them. They weren’t married, and the two lived separately—the deceased in Ang Mo Kio and Chen in Toa Payoh.

Only when police contacted her upon finding the deceased’s body did she finally discover the truth behind why her lover was uncontactable.

According to Shin Min Daily News, the last time Chen saw her boyfriend was six days before the discovery of his body.

When she last saw him, she suggested he stay overnight at her place as he was unwell. However, the 65-year-old insisted on returning to his Ang Mo Kio flat.

Allowing him to do so would be a decision she’d come to regret.

The 60-year-old added that her boyfriend had a history of heart problems. His heart problems were so severe that doctors recommended he got a pacemaker—he didn’t, the reason being he feared being struck by lightning after getting a pacemaker.

Deceased Rarely Interacted With Neighbours

Another reason the deceased’s body wasn’t discovered until a week after he passed was because he was just “some guy” to the residents there.

The 65-year-old rarely interacted with his neighbours in the two decades that he’s been staying in his Ang Mo Kio flat. In fact, he hardly interacted with anyone at all—he never had visitors to his flat.

One neighbour shared that the deceased was rarely seen around the block due to his work schedule. The 65-year-old would leave in the wee hours of the morning and only return late at night.

This was because the deceased worked three jobs before retirement, including selling vegetables at the market and being a part-time cleaner.

You can understand why residents didn’t suspect a thing. To them, it was just another week of not seeing the 65-year-old around.

Not the First Case of Its Kind

This isn’t the first time authorities have dealt with cases of residents passing away alone in their homes.

Earlier in April this year, authorities found a 54-year-old dead in his Serangoon flat after residents reported a stench coming from the unit.

It was almost the same story as the present one—the deceased rarely had visitors and barely interacted with other residents.

Perhaps the most jarring case was in 2020, when the remains of a woman were discovered only one year after she passed away.

Nightmare fuel.
