Religion plays a large role in many people’s lives and many use religion to guide one’s life, modelling their life based on the beliefs of their religion.
In Buddhism, monks are expected to be celibate because of the vows of celibacy they take, so it came as a shock when a Facebook user tried to accuse an abbot from Leong San See temple of engaging in sexual acts with men.
The Straits Times reported that the Buddhist abbot has since denied the allegations but here’s a run down of what exactly happened.
The Accusations
The Facebook user used the name of the temple in Chinese and claimed to be a very devoted member of the Buddhist community. He then went on to say that he was doing this to reveal the truth and safeguard the interests of Buddhism.
On his Facebook account, he accused the abbot, Master Chuan Wen, of engaging a male prostitute to engage in sexual relations with him. He even went on to say that the money used by the abbot came from temple funds.
The Facebook user then added that he felt these actions are a disgrace to the religion and explained that he was doing this because it was “against (his) conscience to deceive anyone.”
To back up his accusations, the Facebook user also mentioned that he has video evidence of this and said that he would upload the videos online.
He then urged others to report this to the Singapore Buddhist Federation and get them to investigate this case.
False Rumours
The Straits Times tried to go down to the temple to get a statement from Master Chuan Wen but he was not present as he was recovering from a stroke as reported by a caretaker there.
The caretaker who wanted to stay anonymous gave a statement about the matter stating that “Everything on that Facebook page is false rumours”.
She also mentions that the page is not being run by anyone in the temple and they have no clue behind who is doing this.
She added that the police had already visited the temple so they will not be commenting any further.
The Abbot’s Statement
The abbot in question, Master Chuan Wen, is reportedly suffering from various medical issues such as cardiovascular problems and diabetes. He has just gone for surgery and is currently hospitalised at Farrer Park Hospital.
When asked by Lianhe Wanbao about this situation, Master Chuan Wen simply asked, “I am a person who has had a stroke, why are you coming to ask me these questions?”. He also added that he had nothing to be sorry for.
The Police
While the police confirmed that a report has been filed, they said that they would not be taking further action after meeting with the Attorney-General’s Chambers as the “conduct in question is between two consenting adults in a private place” and the “prosecution will not be in the public interest”.
Well, now that the abbot has come out to deny all the accusations, if the Facebook user’s accusations are all false, he should definitely be charged for defamation for spreading these rumours to harm the temple and the abbot.
So, what do you think about this situation?
