Bukit Panjang HDB Fire Sends 3 to Hospital; About 100 Residents Evacuated

Three people were taken to hospital after a fire broke out in a Bukit Panjang HDB flat on Sunday morning, 4 October.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force said it was alerted to the fire at Block 479 Segar Road at about 9.35am.

The fire involved the contents of a bedroom in a ninth-floor flat and was extinguished by SCDF using a water jet.

About 100 residents from the affected block were evacuated as a precaution.

Three People Assessed for Smoke Inhalation

According to SCDF, one person from the affected unit had evacuated before firefighters arrived.

That person, along with two others from a neighbouring unit, was assessed for smoke inhalation. All three were taken to Singapore General Hospital.

Smoke inhalation can happen when a person breathes in smoke during a fire. Even if there are no visible burns, it can still require medical attention because smoke can irritate the airway and affect breathing.

No deaths were reported in the incident.

Fire Was Confined to a Bedroom

The fire was confined to a bedroom in the ninth-floor flat.

This means the blaze did not spread across the entire unit or to other flats, based on the available reports.

SCDF said preliminary findings indicate that the fire was likely of electrical origin in the affected bedroom.

That does not mean a final cause has been established. It means early checks point towards an electrical source, pending any further findings.

Electrical fires can be caused by various issues, including faulty appliances, damaged wiring or overloaded sockets. However, SCDF has not stated the specific item or fault involved in this case.

About 100 Residents Evacuated

As a safety measure, about 100 residents from the block were evacuated.

Such evacuations are often carried out to keep residents away from smoke and to allow emergency responders to work safely, especially in a high-rise residential block.

The incident happened less than a week after another Bukit Panjang flat fire at Block 126 Pending Road on 28 September, where a 77-year-old woman later died in hospital. That was a separate incident.

For the Segar Road fire, the latest reports as of Sunday afternoon said three people were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation, while the fire had been put out by SCDF.
