Bukit Timah Food Centre Relocating to a Temporary Area 200m Away from Original Spot

Bukit Timah Market and Food Centre will be relocating soon.

Yes, you read that right. We’re talking about that Bukit Timah Market and Food Centre — the one with your favourite Sin Chew Satay Bee Hoon and He Zhong Carrot Cake. Here’s everything you need to know about the food centre’s relocation.

Bukit Timah Market and Food Centre Relocating to Temporary Area 200m Away from Original Site

If you didn’t already know, the Bukit Timah Market and Food Centre is slated to be closed on 1 October.

The food centre will make way for a new integrated facility, the Bukit Timah Integrated Development, set to be ready by the end of 2029. The new integrated facility will house the Bukit Timah Community Club, a new market and hawker centre, an indoor sports hall and other amenities.

Fortunately, for regulars of the Bukit Timah Market and Food Centre, this does not mean that the food centre will be closed forever. While the food centre’s original site will be cordoned off for development, hawkers operating at the food centre will relocate to a temporary site nearby.

The temporary site will be situated at the intersection of Jalan Jurong Kechil and Jalan Seh Chuan — only approximately 200m away from the food centre’s original site, which is currently at Upper Bukit Timah Road.

Even after the development of the new integrated facility is complete, there will also still be room for the hawkers you know and love. The new integrated facility is slated to have a similar number of market and hawker stalls as the current Bukit Timah Market and Food Centre. For reference, the current two-storey market and food centre has 95 market stalls and 84 food stalls. The new integrated facility is slated to have 87 market stalls and 82 hawker stalls.

Hawkers’ Concerns over Temporary Site’s Parking Spaces Alleviated

The concerns of consumers may have been alleviated, but when it comes to the concerns of the hawkers operating out of the food centre, it’s a whole other story.

Earlier, several hawkers had expressed concerns to Shin Min Daily News about the temporary site’s lack of parking spaces. This lack of parking spaces could potentially affect business.

After all, we’re talking about Bukit Timah here lah… Parking spaces are a must.

Fortunately, on Saturday (14 September), the hawkers operating out of Bukit Timah Market and Food Centre received some good news. The Senior Minister of State for National Development, Ms Sim Ann, announced that the temporary site’s parking lot has been approved for expansion by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA).

Hopefully, the expanded parking spaces will bring the food centre’s business to the new temporary site as well.
