The National Environment Agency (NEA) launched an investigation following reports of a strong burnt chemical smell across west and central areas of Singapore on 2 Aug and 3 Aug.
Strong Chemical Odour Triggers Investigation After Widespread Reports
Air quality samples were collected at the reported locations and nearest monitoring stations. Results showed levels were well within safe parameters.
Affected residents described the odour as similar to petrol or kerosene. Some compared it to fuel or rubber burning.
A Reddit user first reported the incident at around 2:00AM on 2 Aug, describing a “really strong rubbery smell” that did not appear to originate from their immediate vicinity.
The post attracted numerous comments from users experiencing identical situations across different areas.
Chemical Smell Extends Beyond West Singapore Areas
The odour was not confined to western districts. Residents in Queenstown and Bukit Timah also reported detecting the strong smell.
The smell persisted through the morning of 3 Aug before ‘dissipating’.
NEA Continues Monitoring Industrial Areas for Incidents
An NEA spokesperson acknowledged the concerns raised by residents regarding the burnt chemical smell. The agency detected the odour during morning and evening hours of 2 Aug, as well as the morning of 3 Aug.
The agency responded promptly to investigate the matter after receiving feedback from the public.
Though the smell is no longer detected, NEA continues to check nearby industrial areas for any incidents. The agency is monitoring the situation closely.
Lingering Smell
According to the same Reddit thread, several users stated that they could still detect the smell on 4 Aug.
And others stated that they could still smell it today (5 Aug 2025)
Meanwhile, an employee here at Goody Feed has also detected the smell. The incident occurred at around 1pm today in the Bukit Batok vicinity.
