Are you one to shiver when you see a vehicle turning left towards you?
Well, your fear isn’t unwarranted.
42-Year-Old Bus Driver Sentenced to Eight Months’ Jail; License Revoked for Five Years
According to Shin Min Daily News, a 42-year-old bus driver was just sentenced to eight months in jail and had his license revoked for five years after an accident last year. The prosecution had initially requested the judge sentence the bus driver to ten to 12 months in jail and to revoke his license for five years.
The prosecution stated that the bus driver had hit a woman while turning left at an intersection and violated several traffic regulations. This included failing to reduce speed at an intersection, failing to stop while turning, and failing to give way to pedestrians when the pedestrian traffic light was green.
Further, severe injuries were caused to the victim as a result of the bus driver’s transgressions.
The 42-year-old bus driver had initially denied the charges but pleaded guilty after three witnesses testified during the trial.
Bus Driver Hit 70-Year-Old Woman When Turning Left at Beach Road
The accident occurred on 30 March last year at 9:04 pm, at the intersection between Jalan Sultan and Beach Road.
A quick search on Google Maps shows that this intersection is the one right in front of The Concourse.
The bus driver was driving along Jalan Sultan and was about to turn left onto Beach Road. However, as he approached the intersection, the pedestrian traffic light turned green, and several pedestrians started crossing the road.
One of these pedestrians was the 70-year-old victim.
The bus driver did not stop, nor did he slow down. Instead, he turned left while the pedestrians were still crossing and hit the 70-year-old victim.
The 70-year-old woman’s right foot was run over by the bus’s front left tyre and subsequently remained trapped under the bus tyre.
Ouch…
A passer-by hurriedly ran over to the bus to have the bus driver move the bus off the victim’s foot. Later, another passer-by called an ambulance, and the 70-year-old victim was subsequently conveyed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
Victim Suffered Multiple Fractures; Underwent At Least Five Surgeries
The 70-year-old victim, who was the owner of a nearby Japanese restaurant, suffered multiple fractures as a result. She was hospitalised for nearly a month following the accident.
But that wasn’t the end of her nightmare. Even after being discharged on 29 April, she had to be readmitted to the hospital less than a week later for surgery.
In total, the victim had to undergo more than five surgeries and took 108 days of sick leave.
The only silver lining here is that the accident was not fatal.
From the present accident to the more recent accident which claimed the life of a seven-year-old girl in Sengkang, it seems that traffic accidents are on the rise. These accidents serve as timely reminders that road safety is the shared responsibility of all road users — while pedestrians have to keep a keen lookout when crossing roads, drivers also have to remain vigilant.
With any hope, we won’t be needing any more of such accidents to remind us of the importance of road safety.
