A Tower Transit bus and an SBS Transit bus collided, resulting in nine people having to be taken to the hospital.
And no, this didn’t happen in Yishun lah. It happened at Upper Thomson Road.
Tower Transit Bus Service 980 Rear-Ends SBS Transit Bus Service 166 at Upper Thomson Road
On Sunday (8 December), a Facebook post showing images of two buses involved in a collision made its rounds among Singaporeans.
The Facebook user, known as “Bing Callao-Loh”, also posted a video showing a close-up of the collision, and another video showing emergency services reponding to the collision.
The collision had apparently occurred in front of the Facebook user’s home.
So, how did the collision occur?
Apparently, a Tower Transit bus, bus service 980, rear-ended an SBS Transit bus, bus service 166 at around 12:30 pm on Sunday (8 December). The SBS Transit bus was apparently stationary at the bus stop when the collision happened.
This caused significant damage to both buses, with large cracks seen on the Tower Transit bus’s windshield.
The Tower Transit bus also appears to have collided into a bollard at the bus stop.
Wah, can go buy 4D already.
While the Facebook posts do not state where exactly the accident happened, it seems that the accident happened at the Shunfu Estate bus stop along Upper Thomson Road.
The SBS Transit bus service 166 makes a stop at the Shunfu Estate bus stop on its journey from Ang Mo Kio Interchange to Clementi Interchange.
On the other hand, the Tower Transit bus service 980 makes a stop at our “bus stop of the hour” on its journey from Sembawang Interchange to Lorong 1 Geylang Terminal.
The bus stop is approximately a five-minute walk to the nearby Marymount MRT station.
1 Bus Driver and 8 Passengers Taken to the Hospital
According to CNA, Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted to the accident at about 12:40 pm.
Two police cars were also spotted at the scene of the accident.
Eventually, a 46-year-old male bus driver and eight passengers aged between 25 and 79 were taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital. All nine people were taken to the hospital conscious.
Another two passengers were assessed for minor injuries. However, both declined to be taken to the hospital.
Fortunately, the rest of the passengers in both buses appear to be unharmed. There were approximately 20 passengers on board the Tower Transit bus when the collision happened.
These remaining passengers alighted the affected buses and boarded other buses to continue their commutes.
Police Investigations Ongoing; Tower Transit Bus Captain Temporarily Suspended
Police investigations into the accident are currently ongoing. A 57-year-old male bus driver is assisting with investigations.
Additionally, both SBS Transit and Tower Transit have shared that they are reaching out to injured passengers.
“Our team was at the hospital to extend our care and support to them and to render assistance as best we can,” SBS Transit spokesperson Grace Wu shared.
Tower Transit also shared that they were assisting the injured passengers on both buses, and has apologised to passengers on both buses.
Tower Transit added that the relevant bus captain has been suspended pending a full investigation.
