In 2016, BuzzFeed did something unforgivable.
And it wasn’t a quiz to determine what kind of avocado you are.
On 23 Aug 2016, the American media company published an article titled “21 of the Absolute Worst Sandwiches That Have Ever Happened”.
In it, they listed things like Ramen sandwiches, kiwi sandwiches, and a mayonnaise and tomato sandwich, among other supposed “abominations”.
What angered some Singaporeans and Malaysians, however, is that they added one of our favourite snacks – the ice-cream sandwich – to the list.
You can make fun of how much we like queuing for things, you can make fun of our chewing gum ban, but you DO NOT diss our food.
After receiving some pushback, BuzzFeed removed the dessert sandwich from its list, and five years later, has included it in one of their videos.
In 2021, BuzzFeed Releases Video That Showcases Ice-Cream Sandwich
Five years after dissing our beloved ice-cream sandwich, BuzzFeed has included it in one of their latest videos, titled “$1 Ice Cream Around The World”.
As the title suggests, the video showcases ice cream around the world that costs around US$1.
The video starts off with a popular dessert in India – kulfi – a frozen dairy dessert originating in the Indian subcontinent in the 16th century.
It’s often described as “traditional Indian ice cream”.
Next on the list was Matcha Ice Cream from Japan.
This particular dessert is available in vending machines, as shown in the video.
We then see an instantly recognisable dessert that evokes memories of our childhood, and also of yesterday, if we’re being honest.
I’m talking about the delicious and never-disappointing ice-cream sandwich, of course.
The video was presumably shot fairly recently, as the ice-cream uncle is wearing a face mask.
The uncle then scoops up several different flavours of ice cream and tucks them in the thick, colourful bread.
Then, it’s ready to be devoured.
Apologised For Inclusion of Dessert Sandwich
Back in 2016, BuzzFeed drew flak from both Singaporeans and Malaysians after it included a picture of this dessert on their list of the worst sandwiches, along with the caption: “Don’t eat bread and ice-cream, you f*****s.”
In response, the Singapore Tourism Board posted a gif compilation of ice-cream sandwiches on their Facebook page and in jest, said: “Hey Buzzfeed UK, what’s good?”
After the post went viral, BuzzFeed removed the ice-cream sandwich from the list and even added an apology at the bottom of the article:
“So, it appears that an item originally in this post at #7 (an ice-cream sandwich) is in fact a Singaporean delicacy. In which case, I’m sure it’s delicious! A version with English bread and ice cream would not be nice. Sorry for the mistake in including it.”
Yes, we can all confirm that it is, in fact, delicious.
