Ever walked into a coffee shop for a simple meal and walked out feeling like you just paid for a fine dining experience? One mother certainly felt that way after her son’s $17 cai fan.
A mother took to Facebook this week to share her shock over her son’s pricey lunch. The young man visited a coffee shop near Yew Tee MRT station on Monday (2 Jun) for what should have been a straightforward cai fan meal. He ordered fish tail, tofu, and white rice.
The bill? A whopping $17.

The son didn’t question the price at the counter. He paid up, went home, and told his mother about the expensive meal. She posted about it on the Facebook group Friends of Yew Tee, calling the price “really too expensive.”
Stall Owner Explains High Price
According to Shin Min Daily News, the stall owner, Mr Zhou (name transliterated from Mandarin), 46, defended his pricing when reporters visited. He said staff had informed him about the complaint after it went viral. The customer wasn’t new to the stall and paid in cash that day.
Zhou explained that the fish tail was freshly prepared steamed red fish tail. The price varies daily based on the fish size and wholesale costs. “We cook this fresh every day. The size differs daily, so prices change too. We follow wholesale prices, and wet markets now sell this for over $10. Our costs are really high,” he said.
The stall displays clear pricing for all dishes. Staff receive instructions to alert customers about items costing $3 or above, including pork ribs, fried chicken legs, and sotong prawns. This practice aims to prevent price shock at payment.
Zhou pointed out that customers have choices. Those finding prices steep can opt for cheaper alternatives like $3.50 dory fish. “Our prices are displayed there. Everyone has different preferences. If customers think it’s expensive, they can choose cheaper dishes,” he said.
A price list sits prominently at the stall front. Fresh fish items carry the note “according to market price.”
Mixed Public Reaction
The Facebook post sparked heated online discussion. Most commenters acknowledged current high food prices. Some felt the fish tail portion looked substantial enough to justify the cost – like paying for what you get, basically.
Other netizens offered practical advice: ask for prices before ordering to avoid payment surprises.
