Lest you’re unaware, the term ‘auntie’ carries two primary meanings.

Firstly, it could refer to a biologically unrelated female who’s from a generation before yours.

This would certainly fit into local context, where middle-aged women have long gotten used to being called ‘auntie’.

And then secondly, the term ‘auntie’ could be meant as a slight insult.

In most cases, it’s taken to mean that the recipient is old. Or at least, advanced in years.

But that’s close to being non-existent in local context, considering how acclimatised our society has gotten to using the term.

Meanwhile, over in India, cultured Indians would purportedly address people outside their immediate families as ‘aunty’ and ‘uncle’, as a form of respect.

It’s also done to establish status within the interaction.

So in a sense, you can gather similarities between our cultures.

Though in the end, it still cuts a sore term, considering the term’s implications.

But how sore is sore, exactly?

Well, for one woman in India, it meant triggering a cat fight.

According to The Times of Indiaa 19-year-old girl was reportedly walking through a congested Babuganj Market in Etah, India, when she said, in a purportedly casual tone:

“Excuse me, auntie.”

But the other party, a 40-year-old woman, was not having any of it.

Infuriated, she began shouting and verbally abusing the 19-year-old.

According to the report, the teenager could not help but feel perplexed and confused. And so she questioned the woman, only to get a slap across her face in response.

Imagine getting slapped because you call a person ‘auntie’. Every Singaporean or Malaysian would have had red, puffy cheeks by the end of the day.

At this point, the teenager, too, has gotten riled up. Which then led to the most logical development of the story:

A catfight.

Recorded in glorious phone-quality and a distinct documentary style, the scene was, understandably, one of absolute chaos.

And though some tried to intervene, others simply stood at the side to gawk.

Again, similarities between our cultures.

To date, the Youtube video has been viewed some 40K times.

Though it seems that like us and the teenager, they’re also perplexed as to why the woman was offended by the term.

“Why was the woman offended at being called “aunty”? Is that disrespectful?” one netizen asked.

Started With ‘Aunty’, Ended With The Police

The police were eventually called in, and both women were subsequently fetched to the police station.

Thankfully, they managed to resolve their differences at the station, and no formal complaints were lodged.

  1. Married
  2. All the rules above

But of course, I’m 99.9% sure that the post was written with tongue-in-cheek humour.

As for the remaining 0.1%, it’s still wondering how calling someone an ‘auntie’ could lead to a fistfight and thereafter, a trip to the police station.

But then again, life works in mysterious ways.
