Caregiver Captured on CCTV Choking and Biting Elderly Woman

A 39-year-old Myanmar national, Kyal Kyal Tun, has pleaded guilty to three counts of assaulting a 90-year-old woman with dementia who was under her care.

The incident, which took place on 3 Jan 2025, was captured on CCTV footage installed in the elderly couple’s HDB flat.

Kyal Kyal Tun was employed by the couple’s 32-year-old grandson to care for the elderly pair, both of whom suffered from dementia.

The 90-year-old woman was physically frail, required assistance in moving around and eating, and had to wear adult diapers. Her 91-year-old husband was diabetic with high cholesterol and high blood pressure, and needed a walking frame for mobility.

The maid began working at the flat in late 2024. On the night of the assault, at around 9 pm, she contacted the grandson’s father to report that the elderly man had fallen in the kitchen.

At 10:20 pm, the elderly man fell in his bedroom, but this time, Kyal Kyal Tun left him lying on the floor for about 20 minutes.

During this time, she carried the elderly woman to a sofa where she began her assault.

The maid forcefully covered the victim’s mouth with her right hand while restraining the victim’s hands with her left. She pressed the elderly woman’s head against the sofa and shook her.

The domestic helper took the victim’s hands and used them to hit the victim’s face. The victim cried out for help several times and told the maid that she “could die,” but her pleas went unheeded.

Multiple Injuries and Delayed Arrest Following Violent Assault

The CCTV footage revealed that Kyal Kyal Tun slapped the victim’s face, repeatedly shoved her head against the sofa, and dragged her to the floor. When the elderly woman asked for help to get up, the maid ignored her requests.

At one point, the victim managed to move herself into the bedroom where her husband was. About five minutes later, Kyal Kyal Tun dragged the woman out, threw her onto the sofa, and bit the woman’s right hand.

The helper also choked the elderly woman and slammed her against the sofa multiple times.

Shortly before 10:45 pm, the maid grabbed the victim’s hands and forcefully pushed them against the sofa. The elderly woman again told her that she “could die” and gestured at her jaw, saying it had swelled up.

The grandson viewed the CCTV footage later that night and filed a police report on 4 Jan. The victim was taken to Singapore General Hospital on the same day.

A medical report detailed an extensive list of injuries, including 12 bruises ranging from 1cm to 10cm in length, a 2cm laceration on her left arm, an avulsed toenail, and multiple broken ribs.

However, the doctor who prepared the report could not state with certainty that the victim’s injuries were attributable to the maid’s actions.

Kyal Kyal Tun was arrested on 17 Feb, more than a month after the assault. The Deputy Public Prosecutor told the court that the helper was “very stressed” and “had taken out her frustrations on the victim.”

On 29 Apr, Kyal Kyal Tun pleaded guilty to three counts of using criminal force on the victim.

A fourth assault charge will be considered during her sentencing, which is scheduled for 4 June.
